Chapter 1
“Mommy, I think you’re being watched.” Said Hal to me looking his usual four year old way.
“Why would you think that?” Hal’s dad asked looking a little surprised but not for very long.
I however wasn’t surprised. The Dark Riders where evil creatures that wanted the twins of the prophecy. The prophecy stated that twin girls of the Light Rider Leaders would bring an end to the evil of Thurman. The Dark Riders were solely that.
“I have a bad feeling in my tummy. I think it might be a Dark Rider.” He whispered the last two words as if he was saying something wicked then giggled shyly.
Hal’s father, Jasper, looked at him sternly and told him not to be silly.
“They can’t be here now. It’s almost time.” He looked at his me sadly but slightly hopeful.
“Oh, yes they can be.” I said sternly. How could he let his guard down now?
“But you are due any day now and they have not tried anything.” He looked like he was more trying to convince himself than anyone else.
“Letting up your guard is the best way to have me taken. You know I have no power in this state.” I felt stone and sour like I usually did. There was little that didn’t irritate me, and this matter really set me off.
“You’re right.” He said aimlessly, trying to get rid of the subject for the moment,
“I’ve got to go. The meeting has already started. Now that we know, you are having twins we will talk about if it corresponds to the-”
“DON’T-say-it-here!” screamed Hal’s mom, “What if I am being watched?
You won’t leave before Zam gets here will you?” she looked furious then pleading and frightened.
“Don’t be silly. She lives next to us. I’m already late. I can’t wait any longer.” He said then he walked out of the dwelling.
I took Hal down the stairs and into the living room.
The war between Light Riders and Dark Riders pushed the other creatures in this realm to pick sides. The evil pixies were flesh eating spies for the Dark Riders. Their bites felt as if someone had took a fiery blade and cut a chunk out of you. The Zefalas were neutral. They were bitter and kept to themselves. Neither side really wanted them anyway because they didn’t trust anyone and sold everyone out to anyone. The Mer people sided with us. They were good honest folk that thought things through unlike any other creature in the realm Thurman.
I thought about this as I watched Hal doze on the couch. Then I thought about Zam and wondered why she still wasn’t there. I had originally thought that it had been Zema, her two year old, that had been keeping her. Zema, however, was a very mild child; unlike any child, I had ever come across. Zam was now fifteen minutes late. That was a record for her. She thought of the prophecy as a very great importance as all Light Riders did. My twins just might be the ones that the prophecy would be referring to. They were the ones that were supposed to make or break the war. Where was she?
