“Thinking Too Loud”
What started off as simple conversation results in an unsuspecting Stephanie hearing more than what Levi's noisy mind ever intended on sharing.

Gwen Tonnerre - Evelyn Nous

‘Moorrrrrrrre…’

The server was waiting for Levi to tell them when to stop, and the point where most students usually said it had already passed. Another spoonful of cookie crumbles was added to the cup of berry yogurt parfait that was already topped with the chocolate shavings he’d already requested. He didn’t have a problem, he was just solving one. After three more and little space at the rim to spare he finally relented and accepted his post-gym meal with thanks. It likely wasn’t enough for recovery but he didn’t want anything else. ‘I’ll eat more later. I should run later too, my leg’s not so sore…’

Being able to vent in a squared circle always helped cut through tension and left Levi feeling better than when he first got in there. It started as an answer to his brother’s continued attempts at making him his personal punching bag. Attempts, because more often than not he bested the jerk even without proper training. Learning how to throw better punches only ensured he put an end to them with greater frequency. ‘I don’t know what’s worse: that he still sucked after learnin’ or that it took him so long to figure out he could learn…’ Levi was by no means an expert but he had his form down. His alpha-douche twin’s focus eventually dwindled down to about how swole he could get.

It was only after spending time in the gym and showering that he ventured to the dining hall to get something to eat. Now that he had his yogurt, Levi was going to ******** off to his own devices and eat it elsewhere. Just as he took his first spoonful of mostly chocolate, he recognized another Phronesian in there. Not just any, it was the man he would eventually call his king. ‘s**t.’

Withdrawing from the greater part of court life like he did years ago allowed him to fly under the radar. The choice was made for his own sanity, not for any nefarious reasons. At least that was the intention. His duchy had its share of hiccups during the war but had been on the up and up since the treaty. It was something he was proud of, so it was a punch to his naive gut when he learned his duchy was once involved in some serious black market ventures. ‘Should I expect your contributions to pick up soon?’ He replayed the Ulium Princess’ statement just as it was memorized. ‘I’m still cleaning up your messes, a*****e.’ As far as he could tell, nothing illicit came or went out of his duchy since, but it was obvious the timing was not in his favor.

‘I should at least say hi. Last thing I need is for him to think I’m snubbing him. Bet you’ve done that at least once, huh?’ Though with his absence the Prince could already think that. He, in all honesty, didn’t have anything against his rulers. Levi didn’t know either Stephanie or Princess Aleithia well enough to have an opinion. Evelyn on the other hand… ‘I don’t hate her, but he went and made it pretty damn hard to be around her.’

”That’s for all the bullshit you pulled. Now I can forgive you.”

‘There’s that, I guess.’

The insolent twin at least had the wherewithal to be cordial when he needed to most, and unless he crossed Stephanie in a way he didn’t know about, he believed the exchange would be easy enough to get through. Levi made his approach and offered a respectful bow of his neck. He adjusted either side of his open button up that he wore over two tees. For warmth. Yeah. That.

”Your highness, I did not expect to see you today.” That was technically the truth. “It’s nice to see you again, I hope you’ve been well.”

Stephanie was enjoying a simple snack of fruit, cheeses, and bread while he silently communicated with his steward back in Phronese. It was a conversation they had twice daily, though it never took very long. Stephanie had left his work in the hands of a man he very much trusted, so there was no need to breathe down his neck from afar. But he did still prefer to be informed. Rarely did he have to offer direction or even suggestions, but these check ins did afford him the opportunity to do so when needed.

So it was that Stephanie was distracted when his duke approached; he had not even heard the other man’s thoughts as he was far too busy concentrating on his conversation. It wasn’t until he was addressed that he quickly signalled an end to his transmission before cutting contact. He did hate to do so abruptly as he had, but he could always apologize later. Besides, his steward and his manservant Humphrey knew better than most people that he sometimes had no choice if he wished to conduct his business secretly and in plain sight.

”Liam! It has been too long…” Stephanie began as he rose from his seat with a smile. He would have recognized that pattern anywhere; Liam had always been the more tolerable of the D’artagnan twins by a wide margin. Politics forced his brother Levi onto Stephanie and his sisters far more often than he would have liked, but the few occasions he had to interact with the kinder brother were remembered fondly.

It was only a shame that Liam had perished at sea. Stephanie’s smile faded, replaced by momentary confusion before the prince was able to recover his composure and present an inscrutable expression. ”Forgive me. It is Levi, of course; how rude of me. I hope you can overlook my carelessness this once.” Of course it was Levi… wasn’t it? Liam had died. It was a tragic loss, Stephanie had unkindly thought on at least one occasion that he would have rather it been Levi, but life did not much care for his opinion on who most deserved to breathe the same air that he did.

But Levi was different now. Drastically different. Much, much more like his brother Liam. There was no mistaking it, not when Stephanie did not have the privilege of relying on visual cues. He was never fooled by their identical appearance because their minds could not be any more different from one another. Had losing Liam changed him so drastically that Stephanie could barely distinguish him from his dead brother?

Well, that had to be more likely than Liam being alive and standing before him. That had to be more likely, didn’t it? Stephanie remembered receiving the news and there was no forgetting his personal reaction to learning that quiet, kind, and studious Liam was no more. He had never known the man as well as he wanted to, Liam had kept his distance, but he knew enough to regret the lost opportunity. So he knew with certainty that, at the very least, it was Liam whose death he had been informed of. The matter was settled, he had made a mistake, but why did he still feel so unsettled?

“Liam! It has been so long…”

Maybe it was because he was in front of Stephanie of all people that he was more sensitive to the sound of his birth name. After all, this was the man to ‘fool,’ for lack of a better term, and as far as he knew the prince was no fool. Levi schooled his expression and quietly observed him through two different sets of eyes. The first and more present one saw a man predictably realizing and correcting his mistake in real time. Where the dead twin used to take great offense to that, the living one saw it as nothing more than an innocent mixup. They were twins, mixups were bound to happen, even if Stephanie often had the near-eerie accuracy of a sharpshooter when it came to identifying him. Not only that, the reaction from Stephanie felt genuine, like he was actually happy to see who he thought was Liam. It filled him with a bittersweet sensation that had him pressing his teeth together until the brunt of it subsided. The Prince looked slightly older but very presentable, as always. ‘Same, boss. Feels like it’s been a lifetime already. A whole lifetime…’

“Of course, your majesty. No harm done.” He had no reason to believe that Stephanie meant any ill will in his slip up, or that he knew the truth. Should he add something else, perhaps about himself his brother since he was brought up? Talking about Liam in the past tense never stopped being weird, and like a lot of things about his predicament, it became second nature. It was part of the coding that kept him from being caught. Officially, Liam D’Artanagan no longer existed. Lost at sea. He was Levi now, and addressing Liam was one of the many facets of his new territory. That was the reality of it. Lightening the mood sounded like a better option than leaving room for awkward silence. It also sounded better than moving on and leaving with Stephanie with the impression he was insulted. Levi had statements he defaulted to for just this subject, ones crafted by the idiot personally but it was obvious that calling the deceased something like a User Image User Image or a waste of space in front of royalty would be improper. “We had our differences, but he left a mark.” There. Neutral and polite.

Levi felt like how Steve looked when the little pipsqueak caught his tail. He’d just exchanged greetings with Stephanie, but had not thought about what to do after that. ‘Gotta change the subject…’ but to what? He knew the kinds of things Liam could have talked about with Mr. Tall, Elegant, and Smoldering over here – no disrespect, just appreciation – but what did he and Levi talk about? If they did at all? Jack the Ripper’s favorite tourist spots? He shifted his gaze to Stephanie’s plate and mentally itemized everything on it before the dread took over and contorted his face over the possibilities.

He cycled through several subjects and settled on the first one that sounded safer than siblings and politics and less boring than sheet music and the upcoming spring concert season. Not boring for him, but he knew that topic could be tiresome for some. “Will you be at the masquerade ball, your highness?”

He was the man to fool. Even as Stephanie had composed himself and apologized for his mistake, he caught that damning thought. It was something pressing, something at the forefront of the duke’s mind, and it was quite surprising. But of course he had now composed himself and while he could not claim to have been ready to hear something so unusual, it would have taken more than that to break his composure once more. On the outside he was still and calm, but his mind was reeling; was he truly understanding this correctly or was it some sort of morbid wishful thinking? The more this supposed Levi’s thoughts brushed against his mind, the more he felt instead like Liam who was meant to be no more.

He was Levi now. Meaning he had not been Levi before. This was Liam… This was Liam! Stephanie felt relief swell in his chest, but he swallowed it down and kept his expression placid. He might not understand the reasoning, but it was clear that Liam had usurped his brother’s identity as well as his status and that it was imperative this remained a secret. Would he lose his inheritance if his identity was revealed? That seemed implausible on the surface, but what did Stephanie know of the D’artagnan family’s inner squabbles and intrigues? He would do nothing to disrupt Liam’s carefully laid plans.

Levi’s carefully laid plans. Yes, he would have to play his part in keeping the veil in place.

Stephanie counted himself fortunate that at least ‘Levi’ understood that it would not be appropriate to insult Liam in his presence. Pretense or no, even unspoken the words had put a bit of steel in his spine and he did not doubt that he would have lost his temper just a little. It would not have been fair to Liam, he did know that, but the stored vitriol from his far less pleasant twin was surprisingly caustic and he could not have remained unresponsive to it. His shoulders relaxed slightly at the words that were actually spoken. ”Truly he has. He was a good man; I regret not knowing him better.”

Smoldering? Well, he just did not even know what to think about that… surprisingly flattering description. Or the mental image of a pup catching his own tail, though that was admittedly rather endearing.

Levi cycled through potential topics to speak on, any of which Stephanie might have gladly engaged with Liam if they could be honest. But with Levi? A serial killer’s vacation spots might not have been entirely inappropriate, he thought sourly. In truth, he had never found the man to be a very good conversationalist; he was far too arrogant and rude. They never spoke for very long and Stephanie was never more than civil with him.

But with this new incarnation of Levi, perhaps…? Stephanie smiled faintly and gestured to a seat, encouraging the other to officially join him. ”Oh yes, of course. It would not do for me to miss such a high profile party. And if I may be entirely honest, I am looking forward to it. I will be bringing a date.” His anticipation was something he never would have confided to a sneering Levi, but Liam did not know that. He need not know that his cover was compromised, but Stephanie still wanted to speak to him as Liam, in as much as either of them dared. ”Her name is Fiorella; perhaps you have met her? Fascinating woman. But please, do not allow me to dominate the conversation: Have you any plans for the masquerade ball?”

Stephanie spoke with not only a kindness but in a way that had his jaw feeling less tight about whether or not he was aware of the impostor in front of him. So far, that did not seem like the case. If his prince had picked up on anything, Levi could not tell. The more time that passed, the less he found himself worrying about anyone becoming suspicious. Give or take key figures or the surprise person from his brother’s past. The last time someone discovered the truth was years ago and it’d been easy to help them realize how wrong they were, even if it always felt a little ******** up to do it. The consequences of letting them keep that knowledge sounded less appealing.

The invite to join him at the table was a twist that he did not see coming. No doubt his brother had done something at least once in his life to insult the Stephanie Nous. However, if he were honest, he was happy to accept the invite and accept he did. Levi took the chair and offered his thanks quietly. Rules against revealing details and all that. “Thank you, your highness.” But should he have been so amenable to join him, with what he was trying to keep concealed? Maybe not. On the other hand, he could not find any conversations that he felt were poorly had in his memory. At the end of the day though, it did not matter the reason. Stephanie had given an order and he wasn’t about to be an a** and defy him when had spent the entire time trying to avoid that.

He felt a little more relaxed at the idea of speaking to Stephanie, especially when he was being so open, but there was still a dryness that lingered in his mouth about it. Levi was trying not to think about, had he really been his brother, how much of a bad idea it used to be to give him that kind of information. Reel of the woman he named came to mind, specifically of when she was with Stephanie in the music room fighting off Windurians. Prior to that he’d only seen the much self-assured woman around the school and in classes. She, being in Instructor Kelsey’s class, was Fiorucci and paired with Omeletta and Akwussy, he recalled. “I’m glad to hear that, your highness. While I haven’t met Miss Affini personally, she has a good sense of humor from what I’ve heard in class. I’d be happy to meet her formally one day.” With how pleased Stephanie looked and sounded at mentioning his date, Levi wondered if Miss Fiorella would be in the Prince’s future and the future of Phronese too for that matter.

Levi made a nod to his questioned plans about the ball for himself. He did, though his night would not be nearly as eventful as Stephnie’s would be since he was accompanying someone. He seldom attended balls, and limited his attendance to one or two of them here and there in his own duchy. As much as he wouldn’t have minded skipping out, the upcoming ball fell into the category of being a duty and he planned on keeping things quiet for the time he was there. Maybe a dance if one approached for want of one with him. “I won’t be missing it either. That is the extent of my plans however. I plan on enjoying the music and seeing where the night takes me.”

There were people he hoped to avoid, and it was his hope they would be too tied up with dates of their own to pay him any mind. One woman he believed to be on par with his brother when it came to being an unpredictable horror, and another that left him rather ambivalent. She was frustrating, yet she lived more rent free in his head than he cared for, which only made her more frustrating. Stephanie was feeling less like such a person in the moment, but he had neither been frightening or frustrating either. Conversing with him felt familiar, like riding a bicycle. “I hear there will be a fireworks show so that is something to look forward to.”

Stephanie was at risk of giving himself away; the truth was that he would not have, under any circumstances, casually invited Levi to join him. He had only ever spent as much time in that heel’s company as was absolutely necessary to maintain appearances. There was no one here in the cafeteria who would be impressed by the gesture so he should have, by rights, sent ‘Levi’ on his merry way but he had not. This was an opportunity to form a closer bond with the D’artagnan family without having to subject himself to the vile mind of the deceased twin and he would take it.

It was not his intention to make his companion uncomfortable, but perhaps that could not be helped. An extended conversation was bound to be a minefield for this new and improved version of Levi who could not afford to give away his true identity. Thus far Stephanie had to applaud him, though; the prince knew that he would still be in the dark if he was not constantly rifling through the surface thoughts of everyone he spoke to. Levi had not actually said anything to give himself away. He had not said much at all, which Stephanie might have found unusual but certainly not enough to think much of it.

Stephanie chuckled and nodded; he felt particularly qualified to judge Miss Affini’s sense of humor and she was an absolute delight. ”I would be happy to introduce the two of you if you would like. She and I are becoming quite close. If all goes as I intend, she will be my future queen so it is just as well that she familiarize herself with the other representatives of our kingdom.”

Would Levi be shocked to be told so much so easily? It was not difficult to imagine how the departed Levi could abuse that knowledge. Would he try to drive a wedge between them? Or perhaps try to blackmail Fiorella and discover Aithne in the process? Of course if Stephanie could have chosen, he might have enjoyed watching the fool try to steal her away. Fiorella would have eaten him alive if he wasn’t already quite dead.

Stephanie nodded in approval upon being informed that Levi would also be attending the ball. He had not expected anything less; such events were very important for one's reputation. It was a shame that he would be attending alone, though. Stephanie could not even have asked one of his sisters for Liam’s sake; they were both once tormented by the classless wonder now lost at sea and Stephanie could not very well inform them of the truth. Besides, by now he was certain that Aleithia at least would have a date. Or… perhaps she would arrive with Nadia…? The prince pushed aside his uncomfortable feelings at that thought. There was nothing wrong with them arriving as friends. And as far as he need be concerned, that was all that might occur.

”Perhaps by the time the fireworks are lit you will have found someone to enjoy them with. Having such an event here at Utopia is a unique opportunity to broaden our social circles.” He did not know if Levi was even looking for such a thing, but could he afford not to be? He was the D’artagnan heir now; it would fall upon him to continue the family line. And if he did not in turn produce an heir, the vacuum could produce strife within the family.

Of course thoughts of children and succession naturally led him to thoughts of Fiorella. What would their child look like? How many children might they have? Would Aithne enjoy having younger siblings? Those were the fun questions, but there were serious questions as well. At the very top of his head: how did he ensure that Aithne was treated as well as any children he sired? While she obviously could not rule, Stephanie would not abide by any of his children being mistreated, sprung from his loins or otherwise. Her future grandparents would likely present the largest problem and Stephanie was not looking forward to that confrontation.

But he was allowing himself to be distracted.

”Have you met anyone you might care to spend at least part of the evening with? I have heard that you have quite the way with women.” It was the first thing that he had said to the original Levi during the entire conversation. He could have done without saying it at all, but he hoped it might set his companion at ease. Reassure him that his mask was still in place. Dear god he hoped that Liam did not think that was an invitation to ramble off some of his brother’s past conquests. That would be wretchedly uncomfortable to listen to. But he would suffer through even that if he must; it was the least he could offer to this grand act.

talking thinking

“That’s exciting news. I’ll be congratulating you before long then.” It was how soon his Prince mentioned making Lady Affini his future queen that had him blinking with mild surprise. Then again, it only seemed that way as he’d only spotted them together days ago, and it was not as though he was privy to his personal life and knew the moment things started between them. Levi saw a man that hardly looked weighed down by future nuptials. Quite the opposite, actually. Whether that happiness would translate similarly between Phronese and the Kingdom Fio hailed from remained to be seen, but Stephanie’s high spirits made for a good prognosis all around. “It would be nice to meet her, thank you. I’ll make myself available for when it’s convenient for both of you.”

As alarming as it was, he could say with confidence that this Levi wouldn’t look at Miss Affini with any sort of lewd gaze or treat her with disrespect. He couldn’t have said the same for his twin. Stealing someone had always been a particular draw for him, one Levi knew all too well. But ******** around with royals that could ******** with him harder had been a limit. At least until it stopped being one. Trying to steal a touch or get Fio alone would have been considered a thrilling challenge for the asshat.

Not that he would have gotten far if what he witnessed from her during music class was any indication. Watching someone mop the floor with his brother was almost as fun as when he got to do it himself.

“Perhaps.” His head made the slightest tilt as he considered Stephanie’s stated possibility. “Being here has proven to be a unique experience for sure. I don’t know that even a cookout amongst the Kingdoms would have been imaginable over a year ago.” He wasn't opposed to some networking for the benefit of his duchy and in turn Phronese. Forge bonds, maintain peace and whatnot. But that wasn’t what his Prince was getting at. It was kind of him to be optimistic, but he gauged his chances of finding someone to watch fireworks with as slim. He didn’t come to Utopia with courting in mind. For what already felt like a lifetime it had been only him, Steve, and his Duchy, and Levi wanted to keep it that way for as long as he could. He would have to marry eventually. He knew that. Marry… and produce an heir.

Dread crept up his throat thinking about it, which was a lot better than the acid it occasionally conjured. It was no different even in sleep; the most recent nightmare about some blonde accusing him of fathering her brat left him awake and on the verge of being violently ill. Of course, he personally had no children and was, much to his surprise, unaware of any children his twin may have sired.

“...I have heard that you have quite the way with women.”

Levi’s lips curved into a polite smile because had he not, the internal scream he screamed might have spilled out of him for real. Instead he let out a short but practiced chuckle. The monster had a way with them alright. Ways that made him want to pour bleach in his eyes.

His own experiences however were more akin to having soup spilled in his lap: spontaneous, messy, and a little awkward by the end of everything. While some people would be inclined to do something about that, he felt no strong feelings about it these days.

“That is kind of you to say.” There was a sense of relief that Stephanie hadn’t caught on, even if it meant having to own his brother’s atrocities against, well, everyone. “But my reputation’s done more work than I have lately.” Or like, ever. As he was about to remark on not having met anyone, that frustrating woman came to mind. ‘Mercuria.’ Their run-ins usually made him want to flip a table, but the last one in the library was… tolerable. Maybe more than tolerable, but that was the word he was going to stick with. She did look cute with the way the fireplace’s glow hit her face. For whatever reason, it was difficult to imagine anything coming out of that. But she was the closest thing to an answer for his question.

“Maybe there’s someone.” He said, more at ease after that minor fright. He had no reason to think Mercuria wouldn’t be at the masquerade ball, but for all he knew she was probably already going with someone else. And to entertain the thought, he believed it likely she’d decline if he asked. They did not get along. “I could say the same for you though.” He teased lightly, given his recent developments with Miss Affini.

Everything was going so well. The conversation could be said to be a little stilted, but honestly Stephanie attributed that as much to his own nature as anything else. He was a bit stiff at the best of times, but this was nonetheless pleasant. It should be easy enough to introduce Levi to Fiorella as she was not likely to have knowledge of his twin’s exploits. At least he rather hoped that she did not; there really was no telling how widespread the true Levi’s debauchery was, but there was no point to worrying about it at that very moment.

Stephanie brushed a hand over his mouth to stifle a chuckle. He wasn’t very familiar with cookouts, but he had some idea of what one entailed; a small, intimate gathering of close friends and family over food. And he could not have agreed with Levi more that such a gathering between the elites of the different kingdoms would undoubtedly have ended in bloodshed only a year ago. Perhaps the world was healing. Or perhaps Utopia held tight to reigns that were bound to snap someday. Only time would tell.

”I never imagined a scenario like this. In truth I am not entirely certain I trust it, even now. But it has afforded me opportunities to meet new people and forge new bonds. The longer I am here, the less warring with… most of our classmates appeals. With any luck, others may feel the same way.” Not that he really placed any faith in luck. It would take communication, compromise, negotiation, and hard work to forge a peace that benefitted everyone. But for the sake of casual conversation, luck would suffice.

Besides, he had not really meant to slip into the politics of it all. It was rather his hope that Levi had made friends among the student body. Perhaps it might seem frivolous to do, but Stephanie believed there was benefit to even casual ties of friendship between the kingdoms. And Levi might reach people that he could not. Which meant that if he could trust Levi, and for the first time he hoped that he could, he might also benefit from those connections and by proxy so might Phronese. Ah… never mind; apparently he had meant to slip into the politics of it all.

Perhaps that was a safer topic for Levi; he seemed disquieted by the thought of settling down with a woman and starting a family. Even more so by the reputation with women that he had inherited from his brother. At least they were both spared from any attempt to brag about past conquests and such.

But who was Mercuria?

Stephanie was painfully curious, but he supposed the fault was his own for peering into another man’s mind without his permission. He could never ask about anything he found without revealing that he had found it; how vexing. There was a small opportunity when Levi mentioned there might be someone, but then Stephanie was caught off guard by Levi’s teasing comment and he couldn’t stop a short bark of a laugh from escaping him.

”No, no you could not. What you could say is that one woman in particular has a way with me. She is truly enchanting and I dare say she is fully aware of it. However! As distracting as Miss Fiorella is, even in her absence, now I am curious about this potential someone that you mentioned. Will you tell me about her?”

He never imagined the war ending either, nor did he imagine the cool and collected Stephanie to be thirsty for war and all it encompassed. Levi was just as hopeful their luck would last, and neither one of them would have to face going back to the way things were a year ago. War was of no interest to him, and there never seemed to be a solid reason for why it started, or how Phronese got dragged into it. His lesser identical copy felt differently, as if either one of them would have never guessed. It was few and far between that details of the deceased’s exploits popped up these days, and even rarer that they ventured outside the Kingdom. His duchy’s books were in better standing these days, but recently learning that the sizable cushion that kept the place running toward the end of the war was blood money left him deeply uncomfortable.

Thank his lucky stars Stephanie didn’t follow up about his ‘reputation.’ It was as if the Prince had peered into his mind, saw the topic for the toxic waste dump that it was, and said ‘you know what? I’m good, thanks.’ Not that he considered his prince could do that, but he wouldn’t blame him if he opted out of the option. The light teasing landed just fine and Levi laughed a little with him. By the sound of it he swiped right on someone especially worthwhile and found no reason to tinder anymore potential suitors. “Fair enough. She sounds like trouble in the best of ways.”

“Her name is Mercuria and… she’s very free spirited and has no problem speaking her mind. I know that because, well, we started off on the wrong foot.” Because nothing said bad first impressions like wrongfully accusing someone of dognapping your dog and then using said dog to accidentally uncover their deep dark secrets in the span of five minutes. With the way she hit, he’d wager she could fight off a kangaroo with that mitt of hers. Gods above, why was he telling Stephanie all this? “We’re okay now. I think.”

She was also cute, and over the top, and witty, and infuriatingly exhausting with how helpless she made him feel to know how much she struggled when she first got to Utopia. How much she was still struggling because the kind of s**t she went through just doesn’t go away overnight. “Steve really likes her and she’s good with him. She’s softer than she lets on and… she’s intriguing. A hard orbit to escape, if you catch my drift.”

Because of course his stupid ******** brain would resort to celestial metaphors when talking about a literal moon princess.
