On the eve of christmas, a young girl ran down the streets. The girl's hair was blonde, it was long and thin. It flowed by her sides as the snow flung it's white bundles at her. Her bright yellow eyes were wide with fear as she ran. The snow was powerful and hard. It bashed into her eyes, blinding her for a moment. A doll was in her hand, a dog. The girl's black jacket billowed around, hardly keeping her warm. Her jeans clung to her thin legs, making it more difficult for her to run. She cried out, hoping someone would help her. "Please! Please help me..." She fell, her black shirt catching the side of a lamp as she fell. The snow continued it's relentless charge. The girl's doll flew from her hand as she hit the ground. Tears streamed from her eyes as she reached for her doll. She could hardly get up, so she called out again. "Please! I can't find my mother..." She broke off, sobbing quietly as the night went on. The poor child thought she was going to die right there, with the snow piling on her limp form. A bark sounded, from one of the alleys. A little black dog ran to the little girl. It licked her cheek, reassuring her that someone heard her call. The street lights shone on, bright and forlorn. The dog licked the girl again, then it ran down the streets. The little girl looked as far as she could into the shadows. The dog was gone. He had left her. At that moment, all hope was gone for the girl. She wished she could see the dog again, it was better than being alone. Something warm touched the girl's cheek. The faithful little dog was right there, happily sitting by her side. The dog walked behind the girl again. Something soft landed in front of the girl. The dog had brought back her doll. She raised her hand to pet the dog's pointed ear's. It's head was soft and warm to touch. She smiled as he licked her frosty fingers. She willed her hands to feel through his thick fur. His curled tail wagged as she did so. He walked closer to her and curled into her side. The girl grabbed her little doll and hugged it close. She pulled her hood over her head, then sat it down in the snow. The girl took her scarf from around her neck and wrapped it around the black dog. He stood up and licked the girl's face. He curled into her side to help keep her warm. The snow continued it's icy charge, the moon glared down through the mass. The little girl put her hand on the dog's head, patting it gently. She curled up to resemble a ball, trying to keep the snow from fully covering them both. The dog stuck it's head out, and playfully licked the girl's hands. The girl smiled to the little dog that had given her such faith. She closed her eyes, speaking to him. "I think I'll call you Faith. Good doggy, Faith..." The small child's last words were quiet and trailed off. The snow blew by harshly as the wind grew stronger. The young girl and the dog fell asleep, side-by-side, that dreadful night. The snow continued to fall and cover the two. They slept on in the night, the snow continuing to rage on, the young ones unaware of it all. As long as they had eachother, they both felt safe, and happy. Neither wanted to be alone anymore. They were just happy to have someone for company. And so, the two slept on, peacfully. One-beside-the-other.
