Phoenix held the door open for Jules and she walked into the classroom, taking a seat in the back. Phoenix slid into the desk next to her before the bell rang.
“Hey,” he asked as he leaned over closer to her, “Can I see your phone?”
“Why?” Jules hissed as a portly man waddled up to the front of the room.
“Just let me see it for a sec,” Phoenix whispered back.
“Mr. Shadows,” a deep voice interrupted their conversation.
Phoenix and Jules looked up to see the red-faced teacher, his cheesy moustache twitching.
“Mr. Shadows,” the teacher continued, “Perhaps it would be best if you ceased distracting our new student and inform the rest of the class what was the turning point for humans and vampires…”
“Yeah, I’ll tell ya,” Phoenix said as he leaned back in his chair, propping his feet up on the desk, “it was when you were born!”
The whole class erupted into laughter and a vein in the teacher’s temple started to twitch.
“Wasn’t it when King Simon signed the Treaty of Vermalli with the head vampire in 1862?” Jules asked quickly in hopes that it would distract the enraged teacher, which it did.
“You are correct, Miss Constantine!” the teacher beamed with delight, his watery brown eyes shimmering behind his bottle-cap glasses, “Perhaps, Mr. Shadows, you can learn a thing or two from your new friend. Now, if you all will open up to page 856…”
“You didn’t have to do that,” Phoenix informed Jules in a low tone while the teacher started babbling on about the Treaty of Vermalli, “the Walrus won’t do anything.”
“Let’s not test that, okay?” Jules replied as she handed Phoenix her cell phone.
Phoenix started pressing buttons.
“What are you doing?” Jules hissed.
Phoenix pulled out his phone before handing Jules back hers.
“I stored my number in your phone,” Phoenix answered as he started to punch keys on his own phone, “Just in case. If you need anything, call me and I’ll be right there for you.”
“And if YOU need ME?”
Phoenix smirked.
“Don’t worry. I called my phone with yours. I have your number stored in my phone now.”
“Oh, I’m such a lucky girl,” Jules said sarcastically as she shoved her phone back into her pocket.
