hmm well here, if i may, i will turn this situation in another point of view, considering i only know a few facts, from what you told me-

maybe the woman did mean that you look cute (in general), and then as a side note, said that (but) when you cry, you look ugly. from this point of view, it does seem like she is implying that she does not want you to cry, she wants you to keep up a good face and be pretty for the world.

i know that that is what i would meant if i had ever said that about anybody...
