"...I turned my back to the old and worn down town house, and adjusted the rucksack on my shoulder.
I ran for the docks...
And never looked back."
Two years.
Its been two years since I stepped out of my old life for a new one.
A fresher one.
Cleaner.
Warmer.
Safer...
I hadn't received a call from anyone from my old life. But I really hadn't expected anyone to, anyways. Most of my 'friends' weren't really friends at all. Just a bunch of rowdy freshly branded young adults by the world. Once we all graduated from school, none of us really had contact with one another. They all either became partying college students or actually made something of themselves.
I chose the latter.
I left that damn hick city, full of drunkards and people with false hopes-and finally embraced a different life.
I was going to bring life to my grandfather's farm and become a rancher. All those years of him telling me how to raise crops and take care of animals when I did come over really did pay off. I would remember never wanting to go back to the city, wanting to stay here with grandfather and help him raise his farm.
I also remember telling me this;
"One day, when you get older, Ange-this'll all be yours." His old mouth would crinkle up into a smile, and I would nod intently.
I didn't know he was actually telling me the truth.
But it was written in his will that I would inherit the farm, and by the grave of said grandfather I would make him proud.
I was shaken out my thoughts by Renee and Toby. Toby is an accomplished fisherman with a lazy and chill attitude, and Renee is the owner of Brownie Ranch's daughter. They were the latest talk of the town, since they both recently were engaged.
"So, are you coming?" Renee asked me hopefully. I leaned on my hoe thoughtfully, as if I really had to think about it.
"Oh, I dunno...It is the fall, and I might have to harvest that day..." I said, tapping my chin. Toby gave a disappointed look to me, and Renee couldn't have looked more disappointed.
"Oh, Angela I was really hoping-" My chuckle cut Toby off, confusing the two.
"Really, you guys! I wouldn't miss it for the world!" I gave them my signature grin, and the two sighed in relief. "You two really are perfect for one another," they looked up at me; "you both can be really gullible!" They both blushed, Toby rubbing the back of his head and Renee covering her heated cheeks with her hands. I laughed.
Yes, life was the way it should be.
Renee suddenly looked up, her eyes widening. "Angela! I just realized something!" I now looked at her, slightly confused.
"And...That would be?"
"Are you going to get married one day?" Toby finished for Renee who looked at him and smiled, nodding.
"Yes! Who do you like, Angela??"
...Huh? I looked at them, utterly clueless. "...Like? Like as in...Like-like? Love?"
"Yes!"
I scratched my head. "No one." I said quite simply. I mean, really! Who has time to think about something like that? Especially since I'm a rancher. I'm happy enough that everyone here is my friend! And...
Well, lets face it;I'm not exactly girlfriend material-in looks and personality.
I only had one boyfriend before, and that was only a childish game. It was with the boy from my childhood-the one that was here; in Waffle Town. But...I think he's gone, now. None of them look like him, not that I can see...I think...I think he was the only one besides my grandfather that I trusted. We had good times together, but...Again, I hadn't seen him in years. Years and more years.
Renee and Toby were both stunned.
"R-Really?? No one at all??" They both said, and I cocked my head to the side in confusion.
"Yeah. Why're you two so suprised?"
"Its just that..." Toby trailed off, looking to Renee. She looked at him, looking rather sad.
"Its like everyone in the town has someone except...You. We thought...Maybe you had some sort of lover back at your old city-" I once again cut them off by laughing. Not hysterical laughing, just laughing. "Oh, oh wow! That-that's rich! Me? Have some sort of overseas affair with some...Some guy in that city?? That place?!" Suddenly, my laughing started to turn slightly...Angry. "That place?!" I hissed, looking down at my boots, trying to contain my loathing for the place I once called home...No, I don' t think I ever called it home. I referred to it as, 'the place I once lived.'
Yes, thats better.
I could hear Renee and Toby stepping a little ways from me, sensing my slight anger. "A-Angela...? We...We didn't mean to insult you, if we did..."
Oh. I looked up, composing myself.
Of course they wouldn't know why I hated the city. No one did. I was just some young woman from the city wanting a change of scenery. That was all.
And that is the way it should be.
I shook my head, putting a hand up. "No, no. Its...Its ok. I just am tired is all. But really-" I offered them a smile; "could you really see someone like me-in a wedding dress, all lovey-dovey? I mean, no offense to you two..." They just smiled and shook their heads.
"Not at all. But...Its not impossible." Toby said, Renee nodding.
With those words and their original purpose accomplished (inviting me to the wedding), they left; holding hands and walking down to caramel falls-their usual hang out place.
Really...Now they have me thinking about stuff like that...
What would I look like in a dress?
What would I look like, being a wife?
Bearing children?
Cooking meals for my family?
...Who would be the husband?
A nearby moo from one of my cows shook me out of those silly thoughts and I quickly went to said cow.
I can't think about stuff like that-not with what I have now...
