Every now and then Galexy takes us on 'fieldtrips.' I don't really know what she thinks these trips are doing for us, we've all been to the mortal world before and so it's not like it's something special. Still she somehow feels like maybe when we crossover we actually learn something. If you ask me, what else is there to learn other than humans can be real assholes. I don't know if it's to compensate for having no powers, or for having to lead such extremely menial jobs everyday for their whole lives, but sometimes it can get really bad over there.
Today was no different. This time the trip consisted of Galexy, Sora, Mimi, Yolie, and myself. We'd been fighting, so I guess you could say this trip was Galexy's attempt to get us to chill out. I can tell you now that it wasn't working.
We'd been in the human world pretty much the whole day. With the dirty air alone I was beginning to get nauseous, forget the constant yelling and the way they rushed everywhere. Between the five of us I was pretty sure we'd gotten hit on at least a hundred times, and not always by men. Which means there were a hundred different instances when Galexy had to stop us from completely demolishing the humans with our powers. Though I generally didn't make it a habit to burn people alive, I was seriously considering it when that guy slapped my a** hard enough to actually knock me off balance.
Galexy is lucky that only a couple napkins caught on fire, because I could already see the whole place burning to the ground in my head.
So by the end of the day we were exhausted from keeping ourselves in check, and tired of being in this world. Since the general emotion was crankiness it was pretty obvious that this trip had failed to do whatever it was that my guardian had intended. Sora and Yolie kept bitching at each other and I was taking Yolie's side while Mimi took Sora's, which meant that all four of us couldn't go five steps without threatening to break out in a full on elemental death match.
Only thing was, and I probably should have noticed this a lot sooner, Galexy's patience was wearing thin.
We were standing on a street corner waiting to cross, when it snapped completely.
A little black sports car with a part of four crammed into it's seats was shooting down the road, clearly not going to stop even though the light they were just inches from reaching had already turned red. I don't really know what we were arguing about to be honest, but all of us kind of stopped when Galexy stepped out onto that road, and stood her ground in front of the approaching car.
She looked mad, and I'm not talking just a little ticked, or maybe annoyed. No this was full on, ******** mad. This was...well..
The crowd on both sides of the street kind of froze and hushed so fast, it was like someone had killed the power on a stereo. The wind was whipping around her, hard and fast so her white hair was all over the place. She hadn't taken up a battle stance or anything, she was just standing there. The world, slowing down around her, and that car getting closer and closer with each nano second. The four idiots so consumed with whatever the hell they were talking about that they didn't notice the hell that had decided to stand on the crosswalk.
"What the ******** is she doing..." Sora whispered, her voice was small, and I kind of remembered when we were kids. Galexy used to scare the living daylights out of all of us, even if her guardian status made it so that she looked the same age we were.
The guys noticed her at the last minute, and you could see they were too shocked to press the breaks, Still the car stopped as though it had hit a brick wall. The wheels screeched against the pavement, then grew silent, turning in mid air as the car was lifted a couple of inches of the ground.
The whole time this was happening Galexy didn't move a muscle. Not a twitch. She didn't lift her arm, didn't do anything, just stared. Slowly almost like she was taking a stroll, she moved around the front of the car towards the driver's seat. Leaning against the door she caught the driver's completely horrified expression with an almost icy one of her own.
"You were planning on running that light weren't you?" The voice was about as sweet as pouring lemon and salt into an open wound.
"I-I-uh-I"
"Shhh" She whispered, lifting a finger to his lips. When she smiled, her teeth were sharp.
"Now you're going to listen to me okay sweetie?"
The man said and did nothing, just gulped.
Lifting her gaze she moved it over the other passengers. "I know when the cops say don't do it you don't usually listen, but I'm not the cops." She pointed at the boy in the passenger seat. "I can make you do whatever I say. Like, rip out that lip ring would you?"
All our eyes focused on the kind in the front, he didn't hesitate, didn't even look like he was under hypnosis, which believe me I've seen. He just reached up, cool as could be, and tore his own lip ring out. Didn't scream or anything either, even though it came out with more than a decent bit of lip. I could smell the blood in the air even before it started to pour down his chin.
The other three now looked like they were made of paper, or maybe white out. Their faces had gone paler than mine, and that was saying something.
Sora actually looked queasy, I don't remember the last time I'd ever seen her look queasy.
Galexy had turned her attention back to the boy in the front "Now. You're going to follow all the traffic laws from now on right? No more speeding down streets?"
The boy nodded slowly, almost sluggishly, and Galexy's eyes moved to his friends, making sure they all understood. Stepping back from the car she patted his face, her eyes flashing red for the briefest of seconds, before letting the wheels touch the street again. "You should probably take him to a hospital. Remember, no speeding. In fact, from now on you three are model citizens isn't that right? And chivalrous, model gentleman." All four boys nodded.
Feeling her job done Galexy moved around the car and back to our side of the street, while the young men slowly cruised forward at the posted 30mph speed limit.
"Well...that was..." Sora muttered, taking a step to the side and putting me squarely between herself and Galexy. "Did you have to do the whole lip ring thing?"
Galexy just smiled, and turned her back on us to wait for the crossing signal to come back up. Sora shot me a look, that I figured said something along the lines of: 'she's crazy', but I tapped my forehead and gestured in Galexy's direction. I'm pretty sure she tried to think of nothing but puppies, and butterflies until she could get a safe distance from Galexy's head. Which I wasn't exactly sure existed to be quite honest.
Needless to say, none of us felt like arguing anymore that day.
