Chapter Fifteen
“So explain to me why I’m dropping you off at school?” Jade’s mom said as Jade grabbed her overnight bag.
“Oh, I’m studying all night with a friend of mine,” Jade answered, feeling so proud of herself for coming up with that lie and even more proud when her mom bought it. It was normally impossible to lie to her mother, “She lives in the dorm so it’ll be fine. And she wanted to go out and do stuff the next day so she said she’d take me back home.”
Her mom waved to her as she drove away. Jade waited until she was all the way at the end of the street before she headed for Norman’s classroom. She came into his room just as the last of his students were leaving. He didn’t see Jade come in at first and he went into his office without having a clue. This was too good to resist. She tiptoed towards the door to his office and peeked in really quick. He had his back turned to the door. Jade stepped in front of the door and started pounding on it. She watched him stumble back and almost fall to the floor. Jade opened the door laughing to a point where she wasn’t making any sounds. She was just flapping her hands like a seal with her mouth wide open.
“You’re hilarious!” he snapped as he regained his balance. She opened her arms and hugged him tightly, giving him her sweetest smile, “Come on. You didn’t see me come in. I just had to scare you a little.”
“You nearly gave me a heart attack!” he shouted, though he ended up laughing right along with her after awhile. Jade adjusted her bag on her shoulder leaned against the desk, “So are you ready to go home?”
“I just need to finish up here and then we can go,” he said. Jade hoisted herself onto the desk and dropped her bag by her feet, “And how long will that take?”
“Not long,” he replied, “You just have to be patient.”
Jade laid down on her side, holding herself up with her elbow, covering up his work space, “You do realize I’m incredibly impatient, right?”
“Now I do,” he laughed, getting on his feet and sitting her up, standing between her legs, “But you’ve already waited all day. What’s another couple of minutes?”
Jade placed her hands on his shoulders and smirked, “Well then get back to work.”
“Well now that I’m up,” he said, wrapping his arms around her waist. He kissed her, gently at first but over time got rougher. His hands moved up her back and to her chest, slowly unbuttoning her shirt. He pushed it off her shoulders and placed rough kisses along her neck, his fingers struggling with the buttons of her jeans. She leaned her head back and closed her eyes, throwing her arms around him and pulling him closer against her. A flash of light interrupted them and they stopped, staring at the door.
“What was that?” he asked. They didn’t see anyone at the door and they didn’t hear anyone coming or anyone running off. Jade quickly buttoned her shirt back up and followed him out of his office.
“Maybe it was the sun or something,” Jade offered even though they both knew that was unlikely. Norman went outside to investigate, though if someone had come in and then run off, they’d be gone before he had a chance to catch them. Jade came outside with her bag on her shoulder and Norman’s bag in her hand, “Maybe we should just go where we could get some privacy.”
He grabbed his bag and nodded without really looking at her, “Yeah. You’re right. Let’s go.”
They climbed into Norman’s car and left quietly. Neither one of them would feel any better until they were far away from the school. After they pulled out into the street, they started to feel a little better, “I’m sure that was nothing. Right?”
“I don’t know,” he said, “I didn’t even hear anyone come in or out. It’s a possibility that is was nothing. We were just too reckless back there, ya know? We’ll have our privacy.”
Jade grabbed his free hand and held onto it while he drove back to his house, scooting over in her seat so she could rest her head on his shoulder. She stayed like that for the entire ride even though her neck began to hurt. She eventually dozed off until he pulled into the driveway and nudged her awake.
“We’re here,” he said. She groggily sat up and rubbed her sore neck while Norman grabbed her bag as well as his own. He opened her door and started laughing, “Do you need some help getting out?”
Jade yawned and scratched the back of her head and frowned, shaking her head, “No, I’m totally fine. I just took a mini nap while you were driving. I’m totally fine now.”
She finally managed to wake up completely and she got out of the car, following him into the house. He tossed their bags onto the couch and hugged her from behind, “Finally, I get you all to myself with no interruptions.”
Jade put her hands over his and led him into his bedroom. He let go of her and she fell back on his bed. Norman unbuttoned her jeans and pulled them off her body, crawling on top of her while she unbuckled his belt. Norman pinned her arms above her head and pressed their lips together, “I’ve been waiting too long for this.”
“I can tell,” she said, kissing him before he could reply to her.
“So how has the job hunt been going?” Maya’s dad asked her. She sat down with him on the couch and picked up some applications she’d left on the coffee table when Richard called her earlier that morning.
“Well, I got these job applications,” she said, “Jade gave me one the other day. She said a position just opened up. And then I have an application for that coffee shop I like.”
“I gave you a little while to get settled in and start your classes but it’s time for you to start working,” he said.
“I know,” she answered. They’d had this conversation back in June when she graduated high school and she didn’t need to hear the same thing twice, “And you won’t have to pay for it all by yourself. You should get your friend Jade to move in with you to split the rent since she’s the only friend you have who’s working.”
“I know,” she said again. She loved her dad dearly, but she wanted him out as soon as possible so she could start her weekend with Richard. Her dad took the application out of her hands and looked them over, “I just wanna make sure you know how serious this is. And you know if you’re ever in trouble, I’ll always help you out but-”
“Dad I know,” she was really tired of repeating herself, “I’m applying all over the place. You won’t have to worry about paying for me for much longer. Ok? Now, my head is starting to hurt. I’m gonna take a nap.”
Her dad stood up and hugged Maya real quick before he headed for the door, “Don’t forget that your sisters and your brother will be coming down this month for Thanksgiving.”
“I haven’t forgotten Daddy,” she said, waving good-bye as he left the house. When she heard his car pull away, she quickly locked the door and ran into her bedroom. Richard was lying on her bed, flipping through one of her textbooks, “What are you doing?”
“Well I thought you’d be gone awhile and you don’t seem to have any other books in here so I decided to look through one of your textbooks,” he explained, “So I assume your dad’s gone.”
“Yeah he left,” Maya crawled onto the bed on top of him, straddling him as she took the textbook out of his hands and dropped it onto the floor, “Now we can be alone.”
“Finally,” he said, running his hands up her waist. She lowered her body and brought their lips together, her hands exploring his bare chest. She began to undo his belt buckle when they stopped, suddenly hearing her cell phone ring from the living room. She looked over her shoulder for a minute and then back at him, “I can ignore it.”
“It might be important,” Richard replied hesitantly even though he really didn’t want this to be interrupted again. Maya groaned and climbed off of Richard, going into the living room and ripping her cell phone out of her bag. She was ready to start yelling at the person bothering her but her anger faded slowly when she saw Audrey’s name on her caller ID, “What’s up Audrey?”
“Can you come meet me?” she asked, “I need to talk to someone and Jade isn’t answering her phone.”
Maya looked into her bedroom and then back at her phone. She really wanted nothing more than to tell Audrey she was too busy and then go back into her room with Richard but Audrey really did sound upset and she needed to talk about something. Maya finally sighed, “Where do you wanna meet up?”
“Well, can I come to your house?” Audrey asked.
“No!” Maya replied too quickly but before Audrey could react she added, “Um, my house is a mess right now. How about I just come to your house?”
“Oh. That’ll do,” Audrey said, “Come on over to my house.”
“Ok. I’m on my way right now,” Maya hung up and dropped her phone back into her bag and sighed loudly, shaking her fists up in the air, “Is the whole world against me?!”
Richard came into the living room, buttoning up his shirt, “Heading out for awhile?”
“I’m sorry!” Maya said, with an exasperated sigh, “Audrey sounded kind of upset. I won’t be gone long. I’ll be back and we can continue where we left off? Ok?”
“Sure,” he said with a smile. Maya stood up on her tip toes to give him a kiss good-bye and ran off to her car. She wanted to be there for her friend but dammit she tries so hard to get Richard alone and everyone keeps messing it up. Was the whole world against her being close to Richard?
Maya arrived at Audrey’s house quicker than she’d expected. Ever since she’d lied to Tom about that project she’d been overwhelmed with guilt. She wanted to tell someone so maybe it would alleviate the guilt. They sat together on Audrey’s porch but Maya seemed to have a hard time sitting still, “So what did you wanna talk about?”
“So you know about the project Tom and I were working on right?” she said.
“Yeah.”
“Well it was actually a contest and the winner gets to study abroad,” Audrey said, “And Tom forced me to take his name off of it.”
“And?” Maya said, her eyes narrowing as she was trying to figure out what the problem was. Audrey sighed, “Well I didn’t think it was fair since Tom put in just as much work and I didn’t want to leave him and all of you behind so I…I didn’t turn it in. The deadline was at noon.”
“Audrey!” Maya exclaimed, throwing her arms up in the air, “You had the most amazing opportunity of your life! I’d kill to go to London! And you just give it up like nothing?”
“I don’t want to leave everything behind,” Audrey mumbled, “I have you and Jade and my family and Tom. I don’t want to leave all of you behind.”
“You don’t have to worry about Jade and I and-” Maya stopped and went over what Audrey had just said, “Did you say you have Tom?”
Audrey’s eyes widened and she mentally kicked herself for letting that slip. But now that it was out, there was no use lying about it. She grumbled under her breath and nodded, “Yeah, I said that.”
“So you guys are a thing?” Maya said, “Like, a couple?”
“I guess you could say that,” Audrey smiled and kept her eyes on her hands folded on her lap, “He did tell me he loved me. Does that make us a couple?”
Maya’s look of disappointment changed into excitement and she started waving her hands, “Kind of! Oh my god! That’s amazing Audrey!”
“It is until Tom finds out I lied,” she said, “He’s gonna hate me when he finds out I never turned in the project.”
“He may never have to find out,” Maya replied, “And even if he does, if he really loves you like he says he does, he’ll forgive you.”
Audrey thought about it and then nodded, taking a deep breath, “Yeah you’re right. Thanks Maya. My parents will be home in a little while. Do you want to stay for dinner?”
Maya shook her head and stood up, “Nah. I need to be getting home. I have to get some studying done.”
The two of them hugged and Maya hurried back into her card. Maya hadn’t even been gone that long. She loved Audrey, but this conversation could’ve happened over the phone. Maya grumbled as she got into her car and hurried down the road.
Maya was right. Tom never did have to find out. Audrey could just lie and tell him that she never even came up as a finalist. Hopefully Tom would just buy that and not try to fight it. Audrey wiped her eyes and groaned. That’s exactly what Tom would do.
That's right Jade wasn't answering her phone wink Give me a minute to perform my Jade got some booty dance...... So poor Maya am I right? She just wants to see Richard naked and people just keep interrupting wink HAHAHAHA!
