Where were you?” I broiled, steaming charging up to Edan. “And thanks for the note! Yeah I got humiliation from Drea, that’s the worst kind of humiliation out there!” I boiled with indiscriminate anger.
Edan grabbed me in his arms, trying to whistness me, “I don’t think you’ll be mad at me for long.” And of course I calmed down instantly, but I didn’t want to show it.
“What makes you think that,” I fake grumbled putting on the air that I was still furious.
“Because I want to ask you something,” he said slyly.
“Well first I want to ask you something.”
“What may that be?”
“Who are you the Host to?” I realized I wasn’t supposed to know that. But I put a lot of thought into this the night before, and my memory was jogged. My mother told me the story when I was just a little girl. She said that out of all the people in the world, a chosen group was Nephlim, a half angel and half human. And out of that chosen group, there were nine very special Nephlim called Hosts. These Hosts had a voice inside their head that was an angel. They each possessed a small unnatural talent that would protect them in battle against the Netherworld. And that every other generation they chose the oldest direct descendant to be their next Host once the old one was dead. It was these people who protected us, and that we should always be eternally grateful to them.
Edan sighed, regretting that he was telling me this. But I knew that I had the right to know. My mother also said that once you knew the identities of these people, they would protect you, because you were in danger. “I’m the Host to Matoko.”
“What’s your special power?”
“Hai I don’t think you want to know.”
“Pleeeaaase!” I begged, looking up at him.
Edan’s eyes shifted yellow, “Be quite Hai.” He spoke so firmly, and I immediately and uncontrollably fell silent. I couldn’t resist, I was incapable of talking. I moved my lips but, no sound escaped. Even as I walked I made absolutely no sound. I was quiet. Nothing, it was hushed. Edan let his eyes fall back to black, allowing me to once again speak.
“Hai,” Edan continued, “my talent is very dangerous. It takes everything literally, one wrong word and you could be as dead as stone.” Edan voice was strong and serious. He meant it. If he didn’t watch his power or his words I could be dead. But what could he say to kill me.
“But how could you-” I jumbled up the words unable to send them through my mouth.
“If I say freeze, every part of you stops, and when your heart stops you die.” Edan said everything so carefully so that he would be positive he didn’t hurt me at all, and hopefully not kill me.
“Oh I see,” I said, hiding up the fear. One wrong word and I was dead. I was dead if Edan didn’t watch what he said at all times. Anyone could end up dead. My phone vibrated breaking the silence. “One second,” I whispered pulling out the red Razor. “What do you want David,” I snarled at my older brother through the phone.
His voice was covered static and the process of being alert, “Hai you’ve got to come back right now. Pack a bag and get someone to take you to the train station.”
“David why?”
“It’s Zǔmǔ. She very sick in the hospital and only has a few hours left, you’ve got to get here as soon as possible!” Zǔmǔ was my Grandmother; we had to say it in Chinese. She was very strict about our culture.
“Ok I’ll catch the next possible train,” I said letting worry take over me. I hung up the phone and stuffed in my pocket. “I’m sorry Edan, my Grandmother is in the hospital! I’ve got to go!” I started to dash off but before I could move any father he grabbed my arm.
“Hai wait!” He spun me around quickly. “Listen will you go to the Homecoming Dance with me?” Edan spoke swiftly, but it wasn’t because he knew I had to leave. He was nervous about asking me to the dance. I made a vampire nervous.
I blushed pink and smiled, “I’d love that.” And I knew that it was true, because I already loved it. “So then it’s a date?” I said hinting on that this made us a couple.
“It’s a date,” he let go of my arm letting me run back to my dorm. I ran as fast as my legs could carry me. I grabbed my key as fumbled with it unlocking the door. I tugged the key out and slammed the door.
“Hai what is it?” Cana asked peering up from her Algebra book.
“I’ve got to go my Grandmother is in the hospital,” I said out of breath. “I’ve got to catch the next train to Crystal Lake.” I dashed up the stairs and into my room. I grabbed a large bag from my dresser and stuffed it with and extra set of clothes, my toothbrush, the emergency money my Dad had given me, and the most important thing of all. The little China doll Zǔmǔ loved so much and had given me as a little girl, because she always saw me gazing at it. I knew she would want to have it with her.
I exited the room, unsure if I shut the door or not, and ran down the stairs. I was thankful today that I wore my black Converse shoes; I was doing a lot of running. I dashed over the white fluffy carpet, aiming for the door.
“Hang on a sec,” Cana called stopping me in my tracks. I turned around as she gave me a quick hug, trying to console me through what would lie ahead.
“Thanks Cay,” I smiled. I turned for the door and looked over my shoulder. “ And one more thing, tell Drea I owe her fifty bucks.”
Cana laughed, “What?” She was confused, and apparently we thought that was funny.
“Uhm, yeah, Drea was right. Edan asked me to the dance. And to tell you about earlier, let’s just say we are a couple.” I blushed again and ran out the door. I ran down the side walk which was a good quarter of a mile to the principal’s office.
I ran up to the door, and swung it open. The plump secretary sat at her desk, looked up at me, and hung up the phone. “What can I do for you, sweetie?”
“Is Mrs. Gonzales in?” I breathed heavily, tired from my endless running.
“She should be back any minute now. What do you need?”
“I need to get to the train station it’s a family emergency.” Mrs. Gonzales came out of her office, waving goodbye to someone with an obviously with high importance by the way they dressed.
“Oh Hai,” she said looking over at me, “what do you need.”
“She needs a ride to the train station,” said the secretary.
“It’s a family emergency,” I spoke cutting in. “I need to be on the next train to Crystal Lake.”
“I will take you there now,” she grabbed my hand and the car keys from her pocket.
