My Myth:
Myth of How the Night
Sky came to be?
Long ago in a village far across the sea in a little town there lived a small group of people. The days in the village were hot like all the other days and the sun was out like always. The people hadn’t seen rain for many months but the water they had would last them a long enough. It was the month of summer when everyone was out of their houses gathering food, trading items and talking to friends or family. But soon the night fell and everyone was inside talking of how hot the day was or how much they wanted something interesting to happen to change their boring way of life but there was one woman that wished it more then anyone else.
The young woman’s name was Lena. She was known to be calm and peaceful but when the days began to drag on and on without any change she started to get irritated and impatient. Finally one night she decided to go for a walk along the canal hoping to get her mind on something other then her boring life. She dragged her feet along the stone walkway, when suddenly something caught her eye. It was a bright light on the water but in an image of a man. She had never seen anything like it the only thing that was ever in the sky was the dark plan blue that came when the sun went to sleep.
Lena followed the light until she came to a bridge and right in the middle stood a man. He was someone she had never seen before. His hair was white as snow and his eyes grey like slate but for some reason she felt safe with him. The man wore a white shirt and white pants that made him stand out in the darkness of the night. The young woman was amazed. This was the something she was looking for.
“Hello,” the man cheerfully shouted putting out his hand for Lena to shake, “I’m Moon a traveller to this town and a brother to the sun.” The woman didn’t understand. His name is moon and he is related to the sun? The man’s name confused her even more why did he even come here. “I see you are confused.”
Moon smiled at the young woman’s confused looks. It wasn’t the first time he had seen someone look at him like that. As he went closer he could see that the woman was wearing a beautifully made cloak. It caught his interest and Moon had to know where he himself could get one but before he could ask a question like that her wanted to know the young woman’s name.
“Your name is what? May I ask,” It was an odd way to ask a question but he did ask it nicely enough. Moon placed an arm around the woman’s shoulders as he waited for her answer.
“Lena… my name’s Lena, Mr. Moon,” Quietly she answered not sure what the man was going to do next.
“Well Lena, if you don’t mind me asking where did you get such a beautiful cloak?” The woman smiled as Moon continued to compliment her.
“I made it,” She replied taking it off and handing it to the man to admire even more, “It took me two weeks or so.”
Moon looked at the cloak. It was soft to the touch and done with great detail. The flowers and leaves that had been put on it could almost be real. This was what Moon wanted. He had travelled many miles to find the thing to make his home the perfect place. As he passed it back to the woman she smiled and placed it back around her neck.
“Do you mind making one for me?” Lena was surprised to hear a stranger ask for something made by her. She wasn’t sure if she really wanted to do it but without thinking her head began to nod, “Great then I’ll meet you back here in two weeks from today. Thank Lena, Thank you very much.” Before she was able to say anything else the man disappeared in a flash of light.
On the way home the woman wondered what she should do for the man’s cloak. It had been a while since she had made one and hoped that the one she was going to make would turn out to be as beautiful. That night she sat at her loom pondering over how she was to make the man’s cloak. Should I make his the same as mine? She thought untangling the strings from its ball. Or maybe I should do what first comes to mind. Closing her eyes she thought of what the man might want. An image of lights came across her mind on a dark blue background. Then Lena remembered the image she saw off the water and her heart began to beat. Quickly she grabbed the string and began to weave. Hours passed and soon days, finally the day came when she had finished the cloak. It was beautiful and in her heart she knew Moon would love it.
She waited until nightfall came and left her house. Lena ran down the stone walkway and back to the bridge where she had first met the man. But to her surprise the man wasn’t there. The time passed and soon night became day and suntil the man didn’t show. Finally as the sunset on another day and she was about to leave a voice came from behind her.
“Lena, sorry I’m late I had my little brother to deal with. Now lets see what work you have done,” The woman passed Moon the cloak and as he unwrapped it a large smile came to his face along with a bright twinkle in his eye. “Lena you did a beautiful job. Thank you for your work. This will hang in my house for all to see.”
Then like the last time the man left in a flash of light leaving Lena alone in the dark of night. Lena couldn’t help but feel that she had just been used. The man didn’t pay her money or items he just gave her a thank you. When she got home she slept through the night and the next day. Then there came a large knocking on her door. The woman went and opened to see her neighbour with an amazed look on her face. Without any questions she followed her friend outside to see that everyone had gathered to look at the sky. When she looked up to see what they were looking at there it was.
The cloak she had made was hanging in the sky. The bright light she had drawn was height up in the sky and was surrounded but tiny white dots all scatted randomly to cover the dark blue background. The woman couldn’t help but smile and now she understood what Moon had said. I’ll hang it in my house for all to see. Now Lena knew why he didn’t give her money because he knew that this was payment enough.
