Chapter 1
The Job
I walked from the apartment Ed (my brother), our friend (Matt) and I lived in, to my car, a Ford Mustang GT and I pulled the keys from my pocket then unlocked the door. “Hey! Dave!” Called Matt, running out to the car, “don’t forget to win more money out there, we’re going to need another thousand dollars to get into the college we want.”
“Yeah, yeah, I already know that I was the one telling you guys the money situation.” I explained as I started the car and did a burnout out of the parking lot.
I drove into town on my way for the next race I entered; it’s starting at the Dunkin Doughnuts, “How do I get there from here without using much gas…Ah, here we go.” I said as I switched the car into reverse, after backing up a bit I spun the car around and took off down the street. “Hah! I made it with ten minutes to spare…Told ya I could it!” I shouted as parked the car and walked into the shop to get two chocolate frosted doughnuts.
“You’re a little early aren’t you?” Asked Mr. Dardanelles; the head of this street racing circuit.
“You’re one to talk, how long have you been here?” I said rudely, taking a bite out of one of my doughnuts.
“Ah, well played, I don’t wish to mince words with you, not today anyway.” He replied calmly.
“Heh, that makes both of us.” I said swallowing the bite.
“Anyway Mr. Lange, I have job for you…” He said confidently.
“Hah…really? Tell me about it.” I said in a bored tone.
“I need you to take this package to my daughter; she’s at school right now.” He elaborated.
“How can I get it to her?” I asked.
“That’s for you to know.” He said jokingly.
“Alright… high school?” I asked.
“Yep, don’t get any ideas.” He warned.
“Come on, you know I’m not big on dating girls younger than me.” I said walking out the door. I started the car and peeled out of the parking lot as some other drivers showed up. I sped down the roads, as the speedometer climbed and declined, I shifted gears to avoid stalling. As the school came into view I shifted the car into neutral, put one foot on the breaks and turned the steering wheel to the left, the car stopped just before it went onto the curb, “Are you Ms. Dardanelles?” I asked the young lady the car stopped in front of. She silently and slowly nodded her head. “Here ya go.” I said shoving the bag out of the car. I shifted back into first gear and drove off; as the meter climbed I switched gears flawlessly and made it back to Dunkin Doughnuts with two minutes to spare. “Sweet.” I said as I waited for the race to start.
