Sylvia awoke the next morning with messy hair and a light inside her. A light that only those who are in pain understand: hate. She took the assassins dagger out of its sheath and gazed at it. "Windsong, I remember this. This dagger looks similiar to the one that murdered my family all those years ago." Sylvia sighed. "We best be off. We need to find some rangers and unite the kingdom again." Windsong snorted and shook her head. "You're right, does sound cliche."
Sylvia doused the campfire and saddled Windsong. Then she packed her belongings and instructed Windsong to move forward. After only a few hours, she arrived in the clearing where the Meeting of teh Moon was supposed to be held.
There was no sign of life in the clearing. The only thing that showed it to have been inhabitated was the feel of importance. There were arrow marks in teh trees and tent marks in the grass that had just grown back. With a sense of linliness she watched as the clearing pass her.
Sylvia knew where she had to go.....
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sylvia was sitting in a tavern. She had smudged her face with dirt and had put on a plain black cloak to disguise herself. She dignaled to the barkeep for another drink of ginger ale and sat listening to the occasional chatter. One conversation had piqued her interest.
"Fred, I'm telling you! Ansom Vlord has hired goons to kill rangers. No one will take the time to listen to a boy, though!" the boy was leaning across the table, but Sylvia couldn't see his face. All she could see was the black hair which reminded her of someone or something. Before, the thought was finished Fred replied.
"David! Don't speak those words in here! No wonder no one will tak to you. You're gonna get us all killed." Fred said through clenched teeth as he swallowed some beer.
"Look, I know where he lives. We can't just let them kill innocent people. You know who my father is." David said in earnest. He was quickly taken by the collar of his shirt and thrown outside. Sylvia's hand deposited coins on the counter and she walked out, watching as the boy strode to a small building next door.
Sylvia followed him and noticed he had left the door open a crack. She snorted at his stupidity. Putting a foot in the door she slipped in. David had heard her so in a flash he stopped packing his bag. He reached for a bow on the wall and spun around with an arrow nocked. Sylvia had seen this and said "Well met."
The boy looked at her with suspicion after seeing the way she was dressed. A dark colored cloak. Leather boots and her hood up to hide her face. Sylvia took down her hood and said, "I heard you know where Vlord is." She took a step forward.
David raised his bow, his green eyes glittered dangerously. "I know they sent a girl to kill me. Well, David Quickmount doesn't give up in front of a pretty face!"
Sylvia looked at David closer. "Oh, God!" she said as she began to cry, the shock of the last few weeks traveling hitting her. "You're Quickmount's son!" Her body slid down the length of the wall as she used it for support. She took the leather gloves off her hands and offered her right one up for inspection.
David's bowstring snapped as an arrow thudded into the wood beside Sylvia's head. His black hair got in his face as he said. "You can't fool me. I know you have a knife under there!" He pointed first to the ring, then to her cloak.
Sylvia looked up at David. "Kill me then. I've seen enough death to not embrace it. I will be happier now, knowing my race lives on in my mentor's child." she looked at David with sad tearfuol eyes filled with an infinite pain.
David lowered his bow. "you know my father?" he went into the kitchen and returned with a glass of water. He held it ou warily for Sylvia to talke.
Sylvia nodded. "I knew your father." She reached into her cloak and drew out the dagger with a snake. She watched as David took a step back and readche for a weapon. "This is the blade that killed him." The dagger sank into the wood at her feet as she stabbed it downwards. "I hoped it would be the dagger for Vlord to die by, too."
"My father is dead?" David said as he leaned on the table. "I mean, I knew Vlord was killing them off, I just thought he'd care enough to visit first." David sighed and shook his head slowly.
"He couldn't visit." Sylvia said, the comment drawing David's eyes to her. "Quickmount knew they wanted him to lead them straight into a newst of rangers. He fooled them so badly, they thought he was the last." Sylvia ran a hand through her hair. "Besides, being a ranger doesn't allow for much 'family time.'"
David nodded and offered a hand to Sylvia. "I want to be a ranger. My father already taught me and left me a dove ring."
Sylvia took the offered hand and rose to her feet. "I take it that you want to join me in my quest?" she asked. David nodded and Sylvia smiled. "Alright, I'll come back tomorrow with Windsong, she's in the stable." she headed towards the door and reached for the handle.
David put a hand on her arm. "I wouldn't go out at night. There have been dangerous happenings in this town lately." He drew her away from the door and checked the bolts were in place. "Why don't you stay here? I have a couch, a chair, or a bed you could choose from." Sylvia arched an eyebrow. "Oh No, I'll sleep somewhere else. I was just asking because I don't want the last ranger to get assasinated." David winced and slapped his forhead. "I wan't implying...."
Sylvia shushed him. "I know. No need to explain. Look, I'll just sleep on your roof." With that she went carefully ouside and climbed the drain pipe. She took off her cloak and wrapped it around herself. Releived she fell asleep happy.
"And when people say your name, everyone will remember you as the last and first ranger. Mothers will name children after you and rangers will bless your name."
