Chapter 1
Carved in your Heart
“The most important kind of freedom is to be what you really are. You trade in your reality for a role. You give up your ability to feel, and in exchange, put on a mask.” ~ Jim Morrison
She stroked the hair of the crying girl next to her, smiling gently, eyes filled with so much compassion that it nearly hurt. She was in the same position once again. Comforting yet another broken human being, another so called 'friend'. This was stupid. She had better things to do than play this sick game. Situations like that annoyed her, but she still put on a concerned face and pretended that she cared. It was easy, really. You just had to make sure that you didn't laugh out your hate. A straight face was an important part of the act. The eyes were harder thought. They conveyed so much feeling, 'the windows to the soul' they called them. Eventually you get the hang of it and repeat it over and over again, until it becomes natural as breathing. No need to think about it, a self-taught reflex.
"Everything is gonna be alright, things get better"-the words escaped her lying, perfect, blood red lips, warmly, with none of the coldness of her heart. The crying girl smiled weakly, some of the hope returning and reflecting in her bright green eyes. Hope? Ha! She knew otherwise. Things did not get better, the pain does not fade, it just gets so deep that it becomes a part of you, carved inside, forever.
The girl stopped crying and was now sitting on the cold, dirty floor, hands wrapped around her legs, head laying lifelessly on her knees. "Thank you" was the only thing she said, or rather whispered. The other girl smiled one of her warm, perfect, and oh so false smiles. She didn't care.
