“Mimi! We’re all outta blocks.” Izzie’s face was serious.
Mimi nodded. “Yeah. An’ the toy box is empty too.”
“What do we do?” Izzie knew what they should do, Mimi could see. So did Mimi.
“I’ll make some.” Mimi nodded again, like a secret agent accepting an impossible mission. And impossible it might be - Mimi’s control over her power was not very fine.
“Be careful!” Izzie said. “You gotta be real careful.”
Mimi nodded. She closed her eyes and pictured blocks. Lots and lots of blocks, just like the ones she and Izzie were already playing with. She imagined them vividly, the reds and blues and yellows shining and the edges smooth and pointy.
A massive clatter made her eyes pop open. Blocks, all shiny and new just like she’d imagined.
Except they were falling. From the ceiling.
Mimi and Izzie squealed as they were quickly buried in the wooden toys. “Aaah! Mimsy! Not so many!”
“Oww...” Mimi said, completely covered in wooden blocks. She tried to push them away, but the weight of the blocks was too much for her slender arm. “Izz, are your wings okay? Did they get hurt?”
“Nope,” Came Izzie’s muffled voice. “They’re okay. You alright, Mimi? I’ll call daddy - he’ll help us. DADDY!”
But there was no response from either Mr. or Mrs. Madison. There was a good reason for this: they were engaged in difficult and important negotiations.
“It’ll only be for one night. We’ll call every few hours. You sure you’ll be okay?” Mrs. Madison’s face was concerned.
Artemis smiled. “It’s perfectly alright, Mrs. Madison. I can handle those two.”
“We’ll be back around eleven,” Mr. Madison said. He smiled at Artemis. “Thank you very much for this.”
“Not a problem.” Artemis held up his book. “I can handle anything they could throw at me.”
Mrs. Madison smiled wryly. “That might be more apt than you think.” They waved goodbye, and the couple left.
Artemis smiled. This couldn’t be too hard. A Pixie girl and a little Dreamer? No problem.
That was until he opened the door and saw the massive pile of blocks, filling the living room and spilling out into the hallway. “Isabelle? Mimi?”
“Artemis?” the muffled voice of Izzie came from underneath the mountain. “Is that you?”
“Isabelle? You’re under there?” Artemis ran to the edge of the pile.
“And me too!” Mimi added. “I’m sorry, we only wanted more blocks...”
Artemis sighed. Mimi had created the blocks and buried the two of them. “Can you banish them, Mimi?”
“I hafta be able to see them. I can’t see anything!”
“Give me a minute, I’ll find a spell.”Artemis pulled out his book and leafed through it. He’d have to find a mass levitation spell that worked on inanimate objects... He whispered under his breath, feeling the magic leave his body. Slowly, the masses of blocks began to lift. “Mimi! Banish the blocks!” he called.
The blocks began to waver and slowly, they dissolved into thin air. “Done!” Mimi called. She scrambled to her feet. “I’m sorry! I messed it all up and got blocks everywhere an’... I’m sorry!” her grey eyes filled with tears.
Izzie patted her on the head. “It’s okay, Mimsy! C’mon, let’s go play something else!” The little pixie took her best friend’s hand and pulled her away. Wiping her tears, Mimi chased after Izzie.
Artemis looked around the living room and put his head in his hands.
