xp Rachael’s POV
Morning came and as I awoke I realized I wasn’t alone in the room. Lilly, our head house keeper, stood before me at the foot of my bed. I wasn’t in my room at home, but still at the hospital. She had a worried look on her slightly aged brown face. I hated making her worry, she was like a mother to me – due to the face my real mother was never really there during my childhood. She began to speak in her elegant British accent.
“You skipped school Rachael, and now you in the hospital. This is a sign.” She told me angered.
“A sign, huh?” I asked sarcastically with a slight smirk on my face.
“Ha-ha. You make it hard for one to be angry with you. It’s been that way since you were a little child. I’ve never been able to be angry with you for too long with that innocent face.” She said smiling. “Come here love.” She said walking over to the side of my bed and hugging me. “I was so worried you were hurt, but then this boy showed up in the door way and assured that you would be okay. Heavens don’t ever scare me like that again.”
“Ha-ha, I love you too Lilly, but what did the boy look like?” I asked curious if it was Zach. He didn’t seem like the type that would stick around for long.
“Tall, light haired, and handsome. He was extremely handsome; do you think he has an older brother, a much older brother?” She asked playfully with a smile across her face.
“Ha-ha Lilly. I’m not so sure. I don’t know a lot about him, but I intend to find out.” I said finally.
I soon walked free of that old creepy hospital and headed for home with Lilly. When we reached home Lilly helped me out of the car and into the house. It was just the way I left it, I knew it had only been a few days, but somehow I expected it to change. The big white ceiling was still intact, and all the vintage furniture was in its exact place. As I headed up to my room I felt a strange presence before me. I stopped dead in my tracks when I heard the door to my room shut. I crept up slowly trying to make as little noise as possible. As I approached my door I held my hand steadily on the door knob and quickly threw the door open to see that no one was in fact in my room. I looked around warily and walked to my bed. There was an envelope on my pillow. I opened it and read the small piece of paper that it contained.
Dear Rachael,
Meet me at Veteran’s Public Park at 11:00 PM.
I’ll explain everything.
-Zach
I refolded the paper and ran down the steps to the kitchen to find Lilly for answers.
“Did you let someone in my room?” I asked before she could turn around.
“No my child, why?” She asked while looking at me with dearest eyes.
“No reason.” I said quickly as I shoved the note into my back pocket and ran back up to my room.
After dinner I helped with the dishes and went back up to my room to finish the remaining homework I had left from the other day. I started on the Math which is my worst subject of all, and briefly looked at the clock which read 7:30 PM as my eyes faded. I woke up groggily and looked at the clock which now read 11:15.
“I’m late!” I shouted as I jumped up and threw my white blouse on and pulled on my dark blue skinny jeans. I tip toed down the stairs with the note in hand. As I reached the bottom of the stairs Lilly confronted me at the landing.
“You should have used the window.” She said with her arms crossed. I knew I had been caught, and this might be the only chance I have for answers. I needed to know more about this Zach kid. He was defiantly not normal.
“Lilly, Please. I’ll be back in 30 minutes; I’ll do anything you want. Just Please. I need to go.” I said looking as sad and innocent as I possibly could.
“45 and you scrub the tiles.” Lilly said giving me a quick hug, and I smiled.
“Deal.” I said laughing.
I ran out the front door and around three corners to the park. It was illuminated by only 4 lights, while the rest of the park seemed dark and scary. I walked over to the swing set and sat down.
Soon a dark figure appeared in the short distance just out of range of the light. I stood up and waited as he soon came into better sight. It was Zach. I took three steps forward and took a close look at him.
His eyes were a darkened blue with a streak of red in the left iris. His dirty blond hair came down past his eyebrows. His skin seemed to lighten in color as I came closer.
“Are you going to stare at me all day, or what?” He said rudely. That’s when I snapped out of it. I remembered that even though he may be extremely cute, he is also extremely rude.
“I wasn’t staring at you.” I said looking away. “I want answers, and you’ve got them.” Trying to get right down to business. I could feel his eyes on me.
“Fine, what do you want to know?” He said with a loud sigh.
“Who are you really and why were you in the hospital and in the woods? Are you following me? What are you? Are you like a superhero or something? And why haven’t I seen you in school? Are you too old for school? Why me? What do I have to do with you? I’ve never even met you before all this.” I asked all at once almost out of breath.
“Ha-ha. My name is Zachary Caleb Marlin, I’m 17 years old. I was in the woods because I was… assigned to you… I have to keep an eye on you for a while. I’m not a superhero, and I just moved here from Surrey England. I’m not exactly enrolled in school yet, but I will in a few days. And trust me; I don’t want to be involved with you either.” He said with that finishing thought that stuck with me.
“I don’t get it.” I said.
“You don’t get what?” he asked.
“You were “assigned” to me? What the hell are you, some kind of cult leader? Is that what this is? Because if you are, I’ll start screaming.”
“Just chill out, okay? No need for screaming.” He said and waited for me to calm down and then added, “I know it’s against the rules, but hey you’re going to find out anyway. I’m a… an uh… vampire...” He told me sheepishly.
That’s when I burst out into laughter. He wasn’t in a cult, he was just crazy. He actually thought he was a vampire! Like those ones from the freak club in my school.
He stood there with his arms crossed and a slight frown on his face. He looked a little shocked that I didn’t believe him.
“Are you done yet? With the laughing?” He said annoyed.
“Ha-ha, hold on. Ha-ha ha-ha Oh god, I have got to use that one!” then after about a minute of laughing I composted myself to hear what joke he had to say next.
“Don’t believe me, huh? Well then I guess I’ll have to show you.” He said with a ominous smirk on his face.
