Illusion
I watch as your eyes slowly flutter open, I see your mouth become a soft, tired smile as I kiss your hand, your hand reaches over to my cheek and brushes it softly in that way that makes me purr like you always love to hear. I open my mouth to yawn as your soft lips touch my forehead. You grin as I gently kiss your nose, then you wrinkle it and shake you head, your eyebrow length hair fairing as you do so. I watch you get up to go and take a shower, I mew longingly and I hear you laugh like you always do.
I think back to that fateful day in March when we first met. It was a cold, snowy afternoon. I was alone, lying on a snow-covered park bench. I was tired, cold, and starving. I hadn’t had a true meal in weeks, my parents were killed by a pack of dogs while we were playing in the park one day. I somehow managed to escape, probably because my parents were a bigger meal then I was.
So there I lay, shaking from the cold air blowing over me. I see a person walk by, I make a desperate call for help, but the person either ignored me or didn’t hear my plea for help, my guess is the former. This trend continues several more times; there are a few times that I’m too weak to even call out. I feel darkness touching the edges of my vision. Then it happens, I see a new person. This one is barely visible through the heavily falling snow but still there, I wait until their close enough and I delve into my deepest reserves of energy and let out a loud cry. The person stops dead in their tracks and looks towards me, skipping over me at first because I’m covered in snow, but my dark hair betrays me and I’m seen.
The person walks over to me and brushes the white snow off of my face, I can see his face clearly now, It’s you. I will later come to discover your name is Adam.
“Well, hello there little girl.” You say to me. Good God, your voice is intoxicating to me, but I cannot enjoy it because I pass out soon after, ruining my newly acquired high.
I have no clue how long I was out, but it must have been for awhile. When I woke up I was on a soft, comfortable bed, (the same one I’m currently on I might add) and there was a bowl of freshly cooked fish. It smells delicious and it’s smell is probably what woke me up. I take a bite out of the soft flesh of the fish, it tastes like heaven and I love it. I eat every last bite, crumbs and all.
Soon after a door opens to my left and I see you emerge from it, the memories from before flood my mind and I stare at you. You slowly walk towards me, a gentle smile on you face.
“You know, you really gave me a scare. I thought you were done for, luckily I got you here before hypothermia kicked.” You sit down next to me and rub my cheek softly, which makes me purr lovingly. “You’re good at that aren’t you?”
From that moment on we were nigh inseparable, I was your closest companion, and gradually I began to love you., not the love that most people go on about. No, no. What I feel is unconditional love. No matter what you do to me, you can hurt me, ignore me, or even try to kill me, I will love you. For as long as you want me, and then I’ll love you from afar.
Were are meant to be, perhaps not in the most conventional sense of the phrase, but meant to be nonetheless I just wish you could see past the disguise that I can never shed, see me for what I really am. Then perhaps we could be more, but that’s just a pipe dream, you will never see me as more then your loving pet cat.
