Sean stared at the bright moon that hung in the sky like a bright light in a strangeling dark. It was full and created a silvery outline on the clouds that surrounded it and which tried in vain to obsure its brightness. It was so beautiful, so meaningful, that Sean felt wetness brimming at the corners of his brown eyes.
It wasn't that late, but it was winter, and when you lived in Ireland you had to get used to cold and dark winters.
He leant his head back agaist the tree he was using as a back rest, tightening the scarf around his neck and breathing on his gloved hands, trying to get some feeling back into them. He knew his brother would be coming soon, so he cherished the moments he had, just him and the moon.
The sound of shoes on leaves pulled Sean out of his trance. He peered through the darkness and made out a black silote walking towards him. He stood, anticipating his brothers face, but instead was met by the face of a young, pretty girl about his age.
She had flowing golden hair that billowed like a viel in the chilling wind. She was wearing nothing but a thin tee-shirt and jeans that were ripped at the knees.
Sean sat slowly down and the girl joined him. He didn't look into her eyes, though he knew he would find a deep, blue flecked green if he did.
They sat in silence together, Sean gazing at the moon, the girl at the side of the young boys face.
He could feel her eyes on his face like they were actuall fingers; touching, probing, feeling the contures of his face. He let her gaze at him for a while, but finally it became to much for him and he turned to face her, his breath creating a white vapour of steam in front of him that mingled with the cold, night air.
Shock always whipped through him when Sean looked at her. Her pale face was in contrast with the black night. Normally, a person would be cold, sitting in just a shirt in this weather, but not her. Never her.
Finally he decided to break the endless silence. His voice, though quiet, sent ripples inside of his body and was croaky due to lack of use, "I didn't expect to see you here,"
She smilled, a small, grim smile. "I didn't think I was coming back,"
Her voice was soft, almost distant. It still made Sean shudder as he saw that no vapour was visable in the air when her breath escaped her mouth. He covered it up as smoothly as he could, ceasing the shudder as soon as he felt it echo in his bones.
"What made you?" He tried to keep his voice as kind as he could, but allowed some of the pain and betrayal that he felt melt into his words.
She was silent. Sean tried to tear his eyes from her face but he just couldn't. So instead he sat gazing into the green-blue eyes that he thought he would never get to gaze upon again.
"I missed you," She said simply.
He tried to keep his voice steady as he spoke, "Then you shouldn't have left,"
She looked away then. Sean shifted a little so that he could look at her without hurting his neck. He was patient, he didn't speak. Instead he let her dwell over why she did leave. Finally she spoke.
"I had to, you know that. It wasn't safe, what with your family thinking your crazy,"
"I don't care what they think!" He shouted.
"I do," She kept her voice level and her eyes firmly away from his face, "I care about you, Sean, and me leaving was the best way for us both,"
"Yes well I disagree,"
She laughed a laugh like the sweetest melody that ever was. "I'm afraid it isn't up for debate,"
Another noise startled the pair. Footsteps and cries of the boys name. His brother.
"I must go," She said, rising and turnig to leave.
But Sean grabbed her hand, shivering at the icyness of the girls skin.
"You can't leave," He wispered urgently, "Not again,"
She smilled, placing a hand on the boys shoulder, finally running it up to his face, whipping away the tears that formed and spilled out there. Finally she took his other hand and kissed his lightly on his cheek.
"Untill I get lonly again my friend," She said and slowly walked away from him, leaving Sean alone again. Just him and the moon.
