I knew that she, my friend, was having a rough time. she was moody and depressed. She was withdrawn around everyone exept me. she instigated arguments with her mom and had violent confrontations with her sister, Most of all, her bleak and desperate poetry worried me.
no one was in particularly good terms with her that summer. For most of her friends, she had become to difficult. they had no interest in hanging out with someone who was bleak and in so much pain. Their attempts to "be friend" were met with angry accusations or depressed indifferences.
They said that i was the only one who could reach her. Although i wanted to be outside i would spend most of my time inside with my ttroubled friend. Then a day came when i had to move, i was just going across town, but to her it would no longer be like if i was her neighbor and we would be spending far less time together.
The first day in my new neigborhood, out playing with my new neighbors i began to wonder how she was doing. when i got home, shortly before twilight, my mother told me she called.
when i ran to the phone to return her call. no answer. I felt a message on her machine "hey! its me call me back okay". about half an hour later she called. "i have to tell you something. when you called, I was in the basement. I had a gun to my head. I was about to kill myself but then i heard your voice on the machine upstairs " i collapsed into my chair.
"when i heard your voice I realized someone loves me, and im so lucky it is you. I'm going to get help because i love you too."
I hung up and ran as fast as i could to her house and we sat on her porch swing and cried.
