Every morning,
I wake up to the sounds of gunshots
And bombs exploding in the pale grey sky
As I lie on the ground
Trying to shut out the sounds
Of the war raging right outside my door
And I pray every night
God, please, just one day
Just one day of peace
When we can come out of hiding
And stop all this fighting
But I know that day
Will not come soon
That doesn't matter though
'Cuz I still hope and pray
By the light of the fires
I try to read and get my mind
Off of my brother and dad,
Trudging in the war zone
I try to imagine
The pain everyone feels
Slowing them down
Weighing their hearts
I can hear their screams
Their cries of death
But my mother tells us
That everything's gonna be okay
Her lies calm my sister's cries
But I know,
I know that my wish will not come true
That even something like
Only one day of peace
Is too much to ask for
