It seems so long ago on that sad, fateful day
When the small, metallic bombs fell like unholy rain
We were stationed near some God forsaken hill
At night you could smell the death coming in from the killing fields
We had received orders to evacuate as soon as possible
But without any help from the choppers, evacuation seemed illogical
So we dug ourselves in and prepared to all die like men
We all became killers and never thought what might have been
What might have been if our politicians had only taken time to listen
Instead of trying to force those people into their ideals and visions
We did not think of our young wives or our newborn children
We did not think of un held funerals because of bodies that were missin
We only thought of the blood and the bullets and the gas
We smoked our cigs and the fear made our faces like masks
It was two in the afternoon when the first wave came
It was three in the afternoon when that bullet went through my buddies brain
It was load and reload throughout most of the day
How many I killed, I guess only God could say
It was around four in the afternoon when the first planes came
And for the next thirty minutes the whole world just went away
Simple words and syllables can never describe
How it feels to hear hundreds of men die
I looked out over my trench to see what was left
And all I could view was the unforgettable imprint of death
For the next three days we held our own
We held that hill until they finally came to bring us home
And even though I have been home now for so many long years
When I think of that day I still cannot shed any tears
Because the price I paid is so very small
Compared to the price of the peoples names on that long black wall
