Never once had I seen it so
A flash of fire rent the sky
Like an arrow shot from a bow
A meteor had caught my eye.
Copper scales from a dragon
Teach me always to overcome.
I know how to keep trudging on
A champion I have become
The eagle’s heart, the raptor’s might
All feral strengths I have allowed,
But rarely shall they come to light
My mind’s breaking, my head’s unbowed.
I make my wish and walk away
Filled only with a single dread—
I fear the time I’ll have to pay
But until then, I’ll keep my head.

Description:
A small poem wrote in Writer's Workshop after reading the poem Invictus. There's an allusion that most people wouldn't get in the lines "Copper scales from a dragon/Teach me always to overcome" to the book Dragon Outcast by E. E. Knight.
Hope it was enjoyable. - Date: 11/25/2009
