Lacey sat down on her bed and sighed. The fire was still sparking slightly, and the clouds had cleared outside. The stars were twinkling lightly. She slipped into her worn boots and walked down to the lake. She sat under a tree, and skipped a stone. She put her head into her hands and cried.
Terence was lying on his cot. His Dad was already asleep in the other room. He couldn't get comfortable. He sat up and threw off his shirt. What was it about Lacey that made her so. . . mysterious? Why did she act all happy all the time? It wasn't like anyone, especially if they lived alone, could be happy all the time. She seemed more relaxed when they were fighting. It was as if she was relasing all this built up pain.
Lacey kicked of her boots, tears still lightly dripping from her face, and waded into the water.It was so cool. She lifted her skirt slightly and went in a bit farther. Her hair started to gently sway with the wind.
Terence stood up and looked out his window. Life was confusing. Why did he even care about Lacey? She was just another stuck-up brat. Wasn't she? He didn't need to waste his time on her. But she reminded him of someone.He couldn't remember who.
Lacey slipped off her dress. Her night-wear was light, just good enough for swimming. She pulled up the bottoms on the thin pants, and rolled up the sleeves in the top. She ran back up to the tree, grabbed the lowest branch, and climbed to one branch that hung over the water. And she let go. The water was piercingly cold. She couldn't move.
Terence pulled on a shirt and sat on his roof. His mind was clouded with confusion and frustration. It was so starry tonight. Lacey's eyes shined like the stars. Just like 'em. He rubbed his hand through his hair. Wherever he went, he couldn't stop thinking about her.
Lacey kicked off the bottom, trying to hold her breath. That was stupid. So stupid. She reached the top, gasping for air, only to be pulled back down.She kicked. She couldn't get free. Something was dragging her down.
Terence climbed the ladder down to his room. He lay on his bed, still pondering. In a few moments, he was asleep.

Terence sat up and stretched. The sun peeked through his curtains. He got dressed, and headed out to town, hoping to meet Lacey.
uh. . . Lacey sat up and rubbed her head. She was sitting on the shore. She shivered, remembering last night. She walked dizzily over to her dress. She pulled it on, and made her way to town.
"Mrs. Tulune. . .I'm sorry I'm late. I was tired from last night. I hardly got any sleep." She said as she walked into the bakery, leaning on the table for support.
"Dear. . . Are you sure you should be working today? You look absolutley terrible! You should go home and rest."
"No, I'm fine. I'll get started"
Lacey worked until it was time for breakfast. When she went into the store room for more flour, she collapsed.

Terence walked into the bakery. "Mrs. Tulune! Hey, was Lacey working today?"
"Ah. . . Yes, the poor girl was, even after I told her to go home and rest. She fainted in the back room. The doctor came and took her. She's resting over there now. She must've been past the point of exhaustion."
Terence whipped out the door. The doctor wouldn't let anyone visit his patients, so he couldn't go visit her. What had happened?

"My, My. What a bad scrape you have here. Your leg's all beat up. What did you do to it?"
Lacey sat up. The gash on her leg was huge. It must've been from last night.
"I. . .um. . . I don't know, Sir."
He looked at her."You need to rest here for the night."
"I'll be alright , Sir. Thank you for you're kindness. How much do I owe you?"
He shook his head."No, you really should stay. In fact, that's your payment. You need to stay the night." He said as he walked out of the room, closing the door behind him.
