“I…I don’t know what you mean,” she mumbled, eyes cast downward.
“I go to have a shower, change my clothes and get some breakfast, and you sit there worrying I won’t return. How has he driven you to such depression? I remember you were such a vibrant young woman, and we used to go out for a meal or drinking with everyone. Now, we hardly see you.”
“B…but Lewis loves me,” she murmured.
“Do you really believe that?” he scoffed. “Is that why he went away for the week with his friends and your new roommate, but without you?”
For a moment, she sat stunned, before anger took hold. “Get out!” she shouted.
“Okay,” he said, moving to the door. “But I’ll come back and see you tomorrow.” He went to close the door behind him, but thought of something else to say. “Think about what I said,” he pleaded, shutting the door.
Claire curled up on the sofa, alone.
