Meiko trudged along through the corridor carrying her box of cleaning supplies, a duster, some rags, a mop, and a bucket of brownish water. She tried to be positive and hummed a lullaby her mother had use to sing to her every night. Her blond hair was a mess and her blue eyes glanced around the room admiring the large chandelier, almost completely made of diamonds, that hung grandly from the ceiling. Her ears twitched listening carefully for anything. She was to scrub the stairways, the ballroom, the courtroom, and the throne room in the vast palace she worked and lived in. Then when that was finished she would go into the kitchen and ask the cook if there were any scraps for her to eat. How had she ended up like this, working day and night to the bone barely getting a wink of sleep, not being able to get a decent meal or a nice bed to sleep on. She bent over, her back sore and her legs bruised black and blue. She knelt down and pulled out a rag to scrub the shiny marble floor with.
