I have two swords. One is Sorrow, the other is Joy. I do not know their original names, nor the markings that bestow upon them, only the names they have been given.
I have two daughters, one is named Sorrow and the other is named Joy. I do not know their real names, nor do they. Their mother abandoned them when they were younglings, and I took it upon myself to take care of them.
This story has two endings. One is of Sorrow, and the other is of Joy. I shall tell the first: The young brave warrior charged through my beautiful garden to the back porch where my beautiful children lay under the shade of the grand oak tree. My children are quick, but the warrior and his silver blade were quicker, and in a blood-curdling scream of anger and pain my daughters were soon nothing more. And so the warrior charged up the steps to the turret room where I stay, and he marveled at my swords. I told him the names, and which he wanted to choose. The warrior chose Sorrow, not knowing he chose it for himself, and the warrior became no more, struck down in his prime. I drank his blood, his warm, putrid crimson blood, and the warrior was no more.
Now I shall tell the last: The young boy wandered aimlessly into my gardens, unaware of what awaited him. He stared for a good long while at the turret tower in front of him, mindlessly unaware of my daughters behind him. He climbed the nearest tree to reach the window and stared inward at the blue and black swords that sat on my mantle. I told him the names and which he would choose, but he ignored me, and stared intently at the swords, as if trying to uncover the secrets behind them. When I told him the names again, he chose Joy over Sorrow. Now I lay on my bed-poster with the touch of cold steel on my chest. Now I have two endings. One is Sorrow, the other Joy. The sword plunges into my heart, and my hundred years of terror finally come to an end...
