William was now too old to go hunting with Kate and it had been a bad winter that year. The food supply was getting low. Although it was still to cold for prey to be out Kate felt that if she did not go hunting soon William would not make it to the spring. So she left out on a long hunting trip longer than any of her other trips out alone. It was on this trip that the werewolf pack came up on her. She would have been killed if Samuel had not been in the hunting group. He spoke to the leader of the pack and told him that Kate would be of value to the pack as a hunter and tracker. She could be add to the other human slaves that they kept to send into human settlements for what supplies they could not get from the forest. The pack leader agreed with Samuel for he too had seen Kate hunting and the forest. He knew she was better than most human man and she out hunt even some of the werewolves themselves.
