Juno's Journal~
Welcome to my Gaia journal. My name is Juno, officially retired Gaia staff. Thanks for visiting!
September Notes
Hi, Gaians!

September MC's are out today - I hope everyone's enjoying them. My team and I have been trying to bring back some of the "classic" feel of MC's lately, which I tend to prefer myself, being an oldie. Thanks to everyone for their feedback in GCD and SF - we are always open to suggestions!

I've been really busy at Gaia lately, because I've taken on some additional responsibilities on my team - I am hoping that it will challenge me in new ways and give me different perspectives around the company. I guess you can say that I've been reviewing my ultimate role here at Gaia, and trying to see if there are other ways that I can contribute. I've been here for almost 5 years now, and I admit that sometimes the job is a bit repetitive (but what isn't after so long, right??)

However, I would like to spend a good part of this week fixing glitches, which you all have been passionately sending over! With this said, I'd like to give you all 2 friendly reminders about glitch reporting:

1. Please do not report the same thing twice, in more than one place! I read everything I get, don't worry!

2. I do not handle EI glitches. Please send those directly to the original EI creator. You can find various threads in GCD and in pepper-tea's profile. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Halloween is right around the corner! My team and I will be working hard to bring fun new items for shops and the event. And yes, there will be a store update this month. (Sometimes I see threads saying things like, "we haven't had a store update in ages" .... but we haven't skipped any months this year, save maybe 1-2. sweatdrop ) Please do remember: salon updates do count as store updates!

As for me - honestly, I've been feeling a bit burnt out lately. I think with all the various projects going on, sometimes I am just so tired when I get home, that I just want to veg out - but I try not to, as I usually have side jobs/freelance that I need to work on when I'm home. It's tiresome sometimes, but I like to keep busy, and challenge myself as an artist frequently.

I've been trying to think of ways to communicate more efficiently with the community lately. I know a lot of users feel neglected, which I am sorry for - it's hard for devs to keep up sometimes, with all the various projects going on. And I admit, even I sometimes get a bit demoralized by all the hostility and negativity that's going around, though at the end of the day I feel that feedback is a very important factor at what makes Gaia... well, what it is. I always appreciate the users who are polite and constructive when they are making suggestions and requests, though - psychologically it's much more pleasant to deal with that than general raging. XD;;

Overall though, I think communication is important (in whatever form it may come in), and I hope you all agree with this. With this said, improving communication between users and staff (at least myself, to begin with) is something that I'd like to work on with you all together in 2010. I hope that you will help me in this endeavor in whatever way you can. I also hope that you will also give the same courtesy to the other staff members who are making the same endeavor as I am - we all care about what's going on, and while sometimes situations are too complicated to fix right away, we are always trying hard. I think users are also making the same effort, and that's why we should work together biggrin

On a more personal note: I've been playing "Avalon Code" on the Nintendo DS for an hour or two before I go to bed. I find the premise and the gameplay to be pretty unique, though flipping through the pages gets annoying after a while, especially when the page you're looking for is like, 10-15 pages away from the chapter index =_=;;

I usually watch a lot of movies during the summer, but I haven't been able to find as much time lately. I did, however, see "Inglorious Bastards" the other weekend, and I'd have to say that it's the funniest war movie I've ever seen. "Pulp Fiction" is still my favorite of QT's movies, and "Inglorious Bastards" definitely had his touch. mrgreen I have yet to see Harry Potter though, I better do that soon before it leaves the theaters o3o;;

I will be trying to fix some of the more major glitches for the rest of today, for as long as I can. Thanks to those of you who've been reporting problems regularly, I appreciate it!

I hope it's okay to ask this here, 'cause I can't find any info on this in the forums. I was wondering what artist is working on the Hidden Ace EI?

The MC's were pretty neat, but, I hope you just don't intend to bring back that "old MC" feel by solely using black MCs! These were nice though, and certainly unexpected... I really like the Goti slippers.

My only beef is... according to the original Goti description, they were dark creatures associated with the occult! This new description does them no glory... eating tin cans!? Alas. rofl

Anyway, overall good MCs, and it's nice to know that everyone at Gaia hasn't turned all corporate. Increased communication would be fantastic, from both sides.

... also, ever since I've heard of the movie, I've wanted to know if "inglorious" was a real word. I've yet to look it up.

I know you say not to contact you about the EI glitches, to instead contact the artist of the EI. However how are we suppose to do that for EI's we don't know the artist? Is there a particular person we should contact to pass the message to so they can send that to the artist?

The art team has been pulling out all stops lately~! We've really been getting a lot of wonderful items these past few months. I've been continuously impressed. 3nodding

It seems you are not alone in your preference for the more classic type of MC. I've seen much more positive response to the recent MCs than to some previous allotments. Most of this year's seem likely to stay popular for a long time. Keep up the great work~!

I can't help but wonder if some of the negativity one sees around and about these days is due to the stress of difficult economic times. As much as we try to ignore the real world while on Gaia, it does sometimes impinge. I'd've liked to be able to get more of the school items, for example, but I can't justify spending that much on Cash right at the moment. sweatdrop So now my quest list is a bit longer.

A good relaxing movie for a stressful time: Ponyo. I really enjoyed it, even with English-language voice acting. Another easy view, not stressful: Julie & Julia.

As far as communication goes, journal articles are the best~! There's also that new forum with the weird name; I do try to remember to check in it every day in case there's something new.

Thank you for bringing back the old feel of MCs. <3
I've seen a trend with the MCs that always seem to remain popular... Popular MCs usually have three colors that the very most. And they're usually a common color. They usually are or contain a lot of accessory poses. If the item isn't bulky and can be worn with a lot of different avatars, it'll be very popular with a wide audience. And heck, angelic and demonic are always loved. <3 .... I'm sure you know all of this, I'm just in a rambling mood.

I do love the detail and work your team puts into the MCs. However, I'm usually happier with the MCs that don't have twenty different colors in them. x .x;;
Life at Gaia always sounds so busy. I do hope you get a chance to get away, rest and see more movies. <3

Hey Juno, one major glitch I'd love to see addressed is how thigh high boots such as the upside down and goth boots lose a line of pixels when worn with shorts.

Great work, the MC's are top notch, they are one item with multiple poses, not a ton of items under one thumbnail.

Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication, Juno. I appreciate it greatly. Please keep it up and keep Gaia such a great place to hang out! <3

I can't wait for the shop update this month, and I can't wait for the Halloween festivities and activities you have in store for us this October. ^__^ I've been loving all the updates with the shops, navigation, and guilds - they've been so great and helpful. Thank you and the rest of the developers for addressing the needs of our community!

Also, I do hope that relations between members and staff improve; we should be talking about our needs and we should be working together to make Gaia a better place than it already is. There are plenty of us who are dedicated to making that happen, and I do think that it's something we need to reflect on as this year comes closer to its end.

Have a great week!

Both new MCs are lovely, Thank you, but I particularly love the goat - so cute! ^_^

About the hostility/negativity - don't take it to heart.
You always find that bad comments stick out more than the good ones, particularly when it comes to something you've put a lot of effort into, but it always tends to be that people who're happy with what you've done won't feel the need to say anything whereas people who're unhappy say a lot - so it may just look like everyone is unhappy when really it could just be a very "vocal" minority.

Can't wait for Halloween, my favourite time of year on Gaia because there are so many possibilities.

First off, Juno, I really appreciate your up beat attitude and dedication to Gaia. You, by far, are one of my favorite dev's because you put your best foot forward, even though sometimes it gets stomped on. Yet, even when people are negative you still strive for communication with the community instead of just shutting us out. I have been on gaia since the very beginning and the largest problem I've had with it's growth is the dwindling amount of communications between the members and the staff. I'm ecstatic to see you are attempting to reverse that. I'm also happy to see that our opinions do matter and that our requests don't go unheeded.*points to hair*(tell whoever made it "i love you" for me, for making my suggestion a reality) You and the rest of the staff are doing a phonominal job and I aplaud you for the time and effort your put in to making this site a Community, not just a place to kill time when bored. You Rock!

Now, that I've said all that,i do have a glitch to report. Loving the new items, but the Gothic Butterfly(winged mask) is obscured by the hairstyle I wear. here's a screen shot:
User Image
any chance you can get it to layer over the hair? or even better give it an option have the whole thing under the hair making it essentially a painted mask and and option for over the hair. Just a few suggestions. Thanks for bringing back the uniqueness that the old items held with the newer MC's.

I'm sincerely sorry about you having to work so hard and everything seeming repetitive :C We really appreciate you fixing the bugs all the time and everything else you do.
Try not to let the negative feed-back get to you, people can be jerks :/

Is there any chance you can take a look at the Gray Peasant gloves? The don't show up on male avis. It's not a unisexing issue because they can be bought and show up on the dress up menu. And is there anything you can do about the Bolster Sword's layering in the back hand? The sword is layering under sleeves and gloves in that hand. Also, the grip is layering in front of the fist in that hand. Thanks.

Man, I lost the whole bunch of text I just typed out... Oh well. Giving you a summary. xD

Being an artist on Gaia must be hard. EI, MC, goldshop update, sponsors, holiday event, aquarium fish, etc... A lot of work to be had for the team. I respect that. :3

Have a short meeting with the heads of staff (of each section) in the morning and at the end of the day. Each head of staff will rely the plans/progress/info (of all sections) to the rest of his/her section. This way, everyone in Gaia staff will be up-to-date with what everyone else is doing. Not sure whether you're already doing this or not.

If a glitch is known upon release of a new feature, and it can be fixed within the day or few hours, have one person from the staff (who works on that feature) inform the userbase about Gaia trying to fix the problem, via that pop-up warning feature (the capcha one from yesterday). Any glitches/problems that'll most likely take more than a day to fix will then be announced via the announcement forum.

Whenever I'm in the mood to make other users be constructive with his/her feedback, I'll try to squeeze out the necessary information. Good thing about being a user is that I can be rude, and don't have to worry about being unprofessional. Don't worry, I won't flame/troll... .... ....And I'll make sure to not bother with user's general dislike for something (since there's not much you can do when people hate footers in general). XD

Im sorry to hear you are feeling burnt out. I can see how things can be repetitive. But it sounds like you are making a good effort to combat this feeling. I think that in your quest to expand your role in gaia you will also come up with that next big idea that will improve and move gaia forward.

I think that the heightened communication efforts between gaia staff and users has been a wonderful and much needed improvement. Last night so many people were happy to see the system alert message on the bottom bar. I like to think that simple message helped prevent a lot of complaints and grumbling. We knew that it was being taken care of.

You guys are doing a good job communicating to us. I think the next step is going to teach gaia users a better way to communicate back. We all have our own ideas and visions of what we want from gaia and Im sure that can be very overwhelming. Especially when some people feel the best way to get noticed is to rant, be rude, over post, etc. Perhaps you will be able to create a better, more constructive, and streamlined way for us to be better communicators to you.

Good luck and I hope you find satisfaction in your work!

I love these month mcs. In fact so far 2009 been pretty good.

Maybe it would be best if you wait for hp to be on dvd . So you can pause when you want and see extra parts.

Also you think you can fix the winter rose glitch? I don't have a picture. But it has that green goo when you wear other items with it.Thank you

As a fellow movie lover and local, I thought I'd recommend the Capitol Drive-In. It's off, well Capitol Expressway. Although it's getting on the colder side for it now, next summer it's a sweet deal. If you can stay awake, they'll let you watch three first run movies for only $7.25. Plus you can tailgate before hand.

Thought you might like to know about it if you don't already. ^_^ Perhaps a nice way to combat that burn out? I completely empathize by the way. I'm in law school and reading all the time spells epic burn out. What helps me combat it is a nice stint on Gaia. I always adore the happy anime feel here and the people too. So, if it helps, all your efforts are helping somebody else with theirs. ^_^

I like what you've been doing with the MCs lately, so does the GCD it seems. It's nice not to hear them complaining so much about that. ^^

And I'm sorry to hear you're feeling burnt out. They should really let you hire some more help. *wink wink nudge nudge* X3

3nodding I agree that users need to reflect on their own behavior. Sometimes users are completely unreasonable; I find some of the hatred and rants upsetting. I'm not even a member of staff and I wince.

2010 would be a great year if staff and users could reach a happy medium of praise and criticism. I know some people are just trolling and their negativity probably cannot be stopped, but hopefully everyone that does care about this site and the future development of the site can reach a common ground and work together.

I hope so, at least. I will definately try my best to give honest, positive critiques of items / ideas that Gaia develop.

I'm about to go watch Inglourious Basterds today! Coincidence much?

We're all appreciative about the work you're doing, fixing glitches and addressing problems, but most of all, for communicating with us. I say that's one of the top things communities should do most often.

Keep up the great work, Juno! And Gaia staff! whee

Sweet job with the MCs. I like these semi-remakes of past items. :]

I can't wait to see what's next for Oct. MCs. Oct MCs are always awesome.

Also, I have something to report.

This glitch has been annoying me for some time.

User Image

The back collar of the Bounty Hunter Wild West Duster Coat layers over the Breezy hairstyle. Its a little annoying from the back.

I thought I should bring that to your attention. =0

Thanks in advance.

Good luck with the rest of the glitches.

Great job on the September MCs Juno. I hope next month will be just as successful! biggrin heart

As far as the whole communication thing goes, I feel like the communication itself isn't that bad, and the art team I think is least of all to worry. sweatdrop

But I wish we theusers could express our concerns when it comes to things that have been a longtime staple of this site, like the plot, which drew many users in, including myself, and hooked us into the loyal Gaians we are today.

It saddened me today to see that most users feel the current state of plot on Gaia is just "catering to fanservice" with lack of any real depth or development. One user told me they tried getting to my thread, but kept falling in plotholes along the way.

I think if users could feel like they have the power to steer Gaia back in the direction we were once in, where Gaia wasn't a teen hangout, but rather a community of users who enjoyed watching the imaginary world their characters lived in develop, expand and take their breath away, users would feel a bit less worried about the site's future.

On a less serious note, Pulp Fiction was one of those weird movies for me personally. I found myself bored to tears at some parts, then later my eyes were glued to the screen. Seeing Uma Therman get a shot of adrenaline to the heart made that movie for me. heart

But I still have mixed feelings..... ninja

Thanks for all your work on Gaia. n_n I really love the Goti item this month. The Goti clips were always one of my favorite items on the site, and it was nice to see the character brought back. I'd love to see more of Goti in the future.

Also, I was delighted with the unexpected conversion of the argyle shirts so that girl avatars can wear them too. (I don't know when it was done, but I just discovered it recently.) I wonder if there's a glitch, though, since two of them, the Moss Argyle Shirt and the Sea Argyle Shirt are now labeled as "(Female)." (Only the Cloud Argyle Shirt is labeled as "(Any)".)

Thanks, Juno!
