So I just HAVE to throw in my two cents about the tobacco ban here on Gaia. To give a little background - I'm probably the biggest anti-smoking-nazi you'll ever meet. Seriously. I almost cried for joy when I heard that the no-smoking-in-restaurants law was finally coming into effect for Virginia this December, and my political leanings are usually in the exact opposite direction ... I hate smoking. It makes my physically sick when someone smokes near me. And, of course, I can't figure out why anyone would do something that's got such a high chance of giving themselves, AND THE PEOPLE AROUND THEM, cancer. Ok, I think you get the point.
However, when I logged on today to find out that Gaia had gotten rid of all the smoking items from the shops, I was actually rather pissed off. Especially when I found out that people who already had them got to keep them, soulbound! And I missed out on buying them!! BAH!! I always miss the boat, I swear. Of course, had I know in time, I would have bought them, just so I could have items that are no longer available on the site. (I've seen a couple threads in the GCD about how this is going to breed a new strain of elitism ... all new users after today won't be able to get these items).
My point is this; Gaia isn't real life. It's virtual. A fantasy world. We have lots of items that are much more offensive, and I love them. I don't know, I just don't see how having tobacco items on Gaia is promoting smoking.
But I can see where this is going. Just to be safe, I immediately went to the shops and bought all the alcohol-related items I could find. And the lighters. Oh, and the Metal Pipe item, just in case. You never know which items will be next...
