August 18, 2010: KO word of the day: cat

Prayer for Happiness
Bejeweled eyes danced in the shadows as torch light flickered off of the rose-colored granite surrounding me. Plush silk cushions of deep blue and royal plum sat at the base of a gorgeous gold seated cat statue. The statue stared at me, looking as though it was a living being rather than something made from precious metal. Despite the darkness of night, everything around me seemed to glow with life.

Slowly, I sat down on one of the cushions and pulled a stick of incense from my robe. With tears sliding down my cheeks, I placed my offering against one of the paws of the great statue.

"Dear goddess," I prayed, "Things have been tough lately. I am so young, but keep forgetting how to smile. Please help me to be happy again." Silently I sat with my eyes tightly closed, praying for Her to help me.

Hours must have passed because when I finally opened my eyes, the torches had burned out and the sun was beginning to peak over the horizon. Sighing sadly at my unanswered prayers, I got up and turned away to leave the temple.

"Meow!"

Turning quickly, I saw a young kitten pawing at my stick of unlit incense. Stunned, I sat back down with a thud.

Pausing and looking up at me with big gooseberry green eyes, the spotted tawny kitten stared at me. Reaching a hand towards her, the kitten purred and rubbed against my outstretched fingers.

"Sweet kitten, are you the answer to my prayers?"

"Meow!" she said, looking up at me with a slow wink.

Giggling, I looked up at the statue of Bast. "Thank you, Great Mother, for this gift of happiness!"

Picking the still purring kitten up into my arms and giving her nose a kiss, I realized that Netjer would always take care of me as long as I ask with an open heart.
