"... Feeling too late the smart of sun-burn, had put their clothes on. " In the chapter two, these boys were trying to get away from the sun, still on the platform so they put their clothes on. At least they had the smarts to remember that they might get sunburns. It reminds me of one time when my mother, brother, and I had planned to go to the beach in Galveston from Texas City. We were also with my cousin Savanna who had natural auburn hair and freckles that cover her whole body.
My brother adores our cousin and looked up to her as a big sister. I thought of her as just my cousin, and thats all. The one I considered as a big brother was my cousin Dave. he taught me to play billiards and have a lot of fun. I love him so much and I miss hanging out with him.he is now in college working in a bar. That day would have been nice if he were there with us just hanging out.
Our journey wasn't that long , but as a child of eight my patience grew thin. I was prepared to crash into the deep blue waves, with the salty water splashing onto my mouth an face. It was a hot July day and I was ready. I had put on my light blue and white one piece bathing suit under my light denim blue jeans and a colorful orange Texas City Stingray's swim team shirt. My mother wore a black one piece swimsuit and savanna wore a leopard print one piece. My brother Cameron slipped on a Hawaiian Lay Flower print swim trunks and a black T-shirt. he wasn't as eager as me, but his face glowed in excitement.
My mom had packed a picnic basket full of yummy sandwiches and delicious apples! Good thinking mom! We pack that into our step dad's candy red Pontiac Grand Pre, the best car we had. The other one was named Blue Jay and he was a blue and silver SUV that had chipped paint, old as heck, and was huge. After packing the lunch in, we got the essential toys every fun-loving kid needs to have to make a fort at the beach. After our scavenger hunt was over, Mom told us some safety procedures in order to keep us safe. She knew what she was talking about and we knew we had to be safe, so we listened. Once done, we were ready!
The short drive felt like an eternity. My brother and I had actually fallen asleep because we thought it was so long. I had woke up when we were close to the secret beach our step dad showed us a while back. Cameron was right after me and woke up. Nearing our destination, butterflies bundled up inside me. I was so excited I couldn't stand it. I wanted to hit that beach and smell the seaweed and salt that loomed the air.
You couldn't have seen a faster kid jump out of a car. When my mom parked on the side of the road, I already opened up the door and fumbled out of the car. I ran to the back of the car where all the gear rested, awaiting for my mother to open it. She started pulling out random gear like chairs and the food. I helped out by grabbing a few toys and finding a spot for us.
No one was at the beach and that just made it all the more cool. Now it actually felt like our own little fort. Before I could run into the water with my fellow sibling, we had to get sunscreen on. The dreadful, yet protective sunscreen. It could hurt you by stinging your eyes and it helps you from sunburns. However, It Does Wear Off! So that was the first and last time we had put sunscreen on that day. Savanna and my mom set up the fold-able chairs for them in the shade of a palm tree that lingered by, and sat back and talked as Cameron and I were off! Splashing into the water, then swimming out till our feet couldn't touch the sandy ground. We rolled with the waves, crashing onto the shore, while laughing and giggling. After two hours we went to shore for lunch. During this time, mother reminded us to put on sunscreen. We forgot. After another two hours of playing in the sand and making an ugly looking castle that we took pride into making, mom told us it was time to go home. We had sand all over us and we were both as red as lobsters. Mom didn't feel the least bit sorry for us because she did tell us that we should had put on sunscreen. Boy I couldn't tell you how much it hurt. My raw skin itched and crawled over my body. The most horrible thing I had to do was sit in the car, again.
Luckily, we were able to fall asleep in the car, but all Hell broke loose from my skin once home. We had to put massive globs of aloe on my body, also on Cam's too of course. However that was after our painful showers. Gosh what a day. We had a blast at the beach, a wonderful lunch, but in the end received bad sunburns as a parting gift.
Hopefully this was a lesson to the reader and me. I sure learned did! Those kids in Lord of the Flies were quicker than me when I was younger, but I would have been just as quick if I wasn't having so much fun. Oh well, we live and learn. So thats my memory I was reminded of from the quote in the story. Maybe in the story they might get an awful sunburn and wouldn't be able to do anything, or what if someone gets hurt? So many questions I could ask, but that will be for another story, so for now, So long! I can still feel the sting....
