Hello!!! I've just started out writing, and I thought that I might post some helpful tips and tricks here.
I suppose that you already know that, to start writing, you need an idea. You also need to know what age group you're writing for. Is it kids ages 9-14, or is it younger? This will affect how you write and how your characters act.
You need a main character. This character will somehow play a very important part in your book, whether it be competing in the talent show or saving to world from aliens.
The main character's personality is everything. If the character is shy, he/she isn't going to speak his/her mind as much or want to draw attention to himself/herself. Likewise, if the main character is a prankster, they probably get into trouble a lot.
I hope I'm not to naggy (is that a word?). If you need help or want specifics on something, just PM me. Also, if you do something a different way and want to share, don't be shy! I don't mind criticism.
Good luck! biggrin
