. . ."I don't know that I'd call you mad, Zenux, but the man is of a completely different age! It can't be possible." . . ."I'm telling you, Aurin, I know what I saw." He let himself fall into one of the chairs in the room they had been led to. A room across the hall from Tessa and Melissa. Okami had curled himself beside the fire pit in the middle of the room and was feeding it from a convenient nearby pile of wood. From what kind of tree? he wondered. Aurin was pacing, too unnerved to sit. . . ."It could have been majyk that told Mateus my name," he suggested. . . .Zenux scoffed. "You and I both know, through extensive testing, that you are sensitive to the smell of majyk. You would have picked up on that." . . ."And Agnorine is full of the stuff. I could get confused. We don't know." . . ."I'm telling you, brother, that man is our kin." . . ."It's true." Both twins looked over at Okami as though they'd forgotten his presence. He lay comfortably, stretching in the warmth from the flames. He rolled a sliver of bark from the unknown wood between his fingers, inspecting the flesh-like softness of it. His gold-green eyes met their stares calmly. . . ."I can smell it from you," he said simply, "It's very similar." When they continued to gape at him, he smiled. "Come on. You know us Ulfkenn have very good noses." . . ."You could have said something," Zenux pointed out. . . ."It didn't seem like a time to," his grin widened, "You two should feel honored! Sons of the Moon Bringer. This trip keeps getting more and more interesting." . . .Aurin's eyes narrowed. "What do you mean 'sons'? The Moon Bringer had no children. I've heard all the stories." . . .Okami looked too happy to tease. "Well, maybe you're thinking of the wrong story. Lulthriam didn't just vanish after merging Out World. Obviously. Since he's in that other chamber." . . .Zenux tried not to want to strangle this wolf. "How can you tell we're his sons? You're sure he might not be related in some other sense? Distantly?" . . .Okami's ears twitched and he looked thoughtful. "The scent is too similar. You two may not have ever really noticed -or just tried not to- but you're not... Oulskana. What's your word? The dominant kind of the world? Ah, I forget." . . ."Aelphkan," Aurin supplied, " 'of the sky.' " . . ."Yes, that's it. You two are... unique. Or had been. The difference between your scent and others is subtle, but enough for any clever Ulfken to pick up on. And you may dislike me, Zenux, but you can't deny I am a clever wolf." His smile was smug while Zenux rolled his eyes. Then it faded back into that thoughtful look. "Your scent seems much more of the world, in fact. You are more... eruskana than oulskana." . . .Aurin smiled at that. "We are of the world and they are of the sky? I like that." . . .Zenux sighed. It didn't matter really. They were still different. Like... "Okami." . . ."Yeah?" . . ."...What about the girls? How would you describe their scents?" . . .Aurin stopped his then-slowed pacing and looked at Zenux, then the other. Okami was quiet for a long time it seemed before he said "I can't," with an apologetic shrug.
