This is my favourite thing to do in most games. Perhaps it appeals more to my collecting obsession than anything else, but I enjoy it all the same.
It's deceptively simple in Gaia - just move the mouse from side to side; the reeling is automatic - and catch fish until you've got 18 in total. Until you reach this max, the bait bucket is practically infinite. After, you need a fresh bucket to continue.
This mini-game requires a great time sink. Filling a bucket can take about 5 mins if you're fast and don't keep on losing fish. Even so, since I'm right handed, there's nothing much I can do while fishing other than listen/watch a video or just simply talk to other fisher folk in the room.
I will have to find something very useful to do in the meantime while I fish to justify its continuance, since IRL there's so many things I need to work on and triumph over. Putting a lot of effort into this means an Angelic Rod some day. Otherwise, I'll have to keep earning gold and purchase one. That's not a good option for me.
For now, I can say fishing and the quest to earn the highest rod in the game has brought my confidence a smidge. At first, Bass'ken seemed impossible. Today I pulled up 3 catfish (1 of each kind) and a couple of stripers. I believe if like others have advised, I'll eventually become skilled in this first lake and then move on the others.
I usually blame myself for starting and not finishing things like courses and classes. Through this desire to have the best rod, I've seen that self discipline is a trait I do have and can cultivate. I hope to apply this to other activities that require patience and skill building.
It's okay not be the same as everyone else, but I do want to build a life and until I learn differently, I need to put more energy in accumulating RL earnings as Gaia gold only works in this world and it take real cash to buy a good amount of the in game currency.
