Summer paced back and forth across her small bedroom. She thought and thought, which was all she could do at this point. “What if someone finds out?” she asked herself. “What will happen? I can’t get caught… I just can’t…” She walked over to her closet and opened the door; she looked down at the floor and gazed at the pool of blood and Brad’s limp body. She stumbled into the bathroom. After a few minutes of convulsing over the toilet she sat back and leaned her head against the sink. “What have I done? How could I?” She thought to herself. She stood and walked back into her room and sunk down to the floor and just stared at him. “I love him… I really do…” She told herself. A knock at the door shook her out of her trance. She stood from the floor and quickly shut the closet. “Summer? You there?” Came Molly’s voice from the other side of the door. “Yeah I’m here.” Summer replied as she opened the front door. “Hey!” Molly said giving Summer a hug. “So, how did things go with Brad?” “Great.” Summer said with a fake smile. “Uh oh. What happened?” Molly asked as she walked into the apartment. “Nothing bad. I just wasn’t feeling very good so he went home early. But other then that everything was fine.” “Oh, okay. So do you want me to leave?” “If you wouldn’t mind. I’ll call you in the morning.” “Alright. Feel better babe.” “Will do.” Summer said with a small smile as she gave Molly a hug. After Molly had left Summer went back into her room and just stared at Brad’s lifeless body. She thought back to the events that had led up to this moment.
“Hey!” Summer said as she let Brad into the apartment. He seemed distracted. “Everything okay?” she asked. “Yeah, of course.” He said giving her a hug. She kissed him on the neck and his body seemed to tense up for a moment. “No something is wrong. What is it?” “Why do you assume something is wrong?” Brad asked. “Because something is wrong. Now tell me what it is.” “Uhh…” he said rubbing the back of his neck. “We need to talk.” He walked over to the couch and sat down. “Should I be worried?” She asked as she sat on the edge of the coffee table and faced him. “No, I don’t think so.” “Alright, because I am…” “Heh. It’s fine.” Brad replied with an uncomfortable smile, which did anything but ease Summer’s mind. He put his hand on her knee. “Umm… what do you think about…?” He paused and looked at the ground as if it was going to tell him what to say. “Uh… what do you think about… think about us being… umm… being just friends for right now?” “Huh?” Summer said. She stared blankly at him and her eyes began to well up. Brad just looked at her. He seemed to be hurting just as much as her. “Are you really giving me a choice in the matter? Or were you just asking my opinion to be a nice guy?” She asked slowly. She seemed almost confused by his words. Brad just looked at the ground like a little boy ashamed of something he just did. “Guess I don’t have a choice…” Summer said. Her mouth felt like mush as her voice trailed off, she looked up at the ceiling trying to somehow hide her tears. “Why?” Summer asked after a long silence. “What did I do wrong?” “Nothing.” Brad replied looking up at her. “Oh. Nothing?” Summer said as she stood and walked across the room. “So you mean to tell me you’re ripping my life apart just for the hell of it?” She said calmly as tears began to flow down her cheeks. “I’m sorry.” Brad said putting his head in his hands. “No Brad. You don’t get off that easy. Tell me why I’m hurting like this. Tell me I’m ugly… I’m a b***h… tell me you ******** hate me! Tell me anything so I know why!” Summer yelled. “Don’t say that. You’re the sweetest, most beautiful women I have ever known and I love you so much.” “You can’t say that. You can’t mean that. You can’t break my heart like this and tell me you love me. It doesn’t work like that Brad… you can’t have it both ways.” Summer’s voice trailed off again and she fell to the floor sobbing. Brad stood from the couch and rushed to her and put his arms around her. “I don’t want to loose you Summer. That would kill me.” “You’re killing me right now… why are you doing this? Just tell me why…” “I have no other choice.” “What’s making you choose?” She gazed up into his green eyes trying to make sense of his words, which left her confused and hurt. “My job.” “Bullshit!” Summer yelled feebly struggling to get out of his arms. “I never told you to pick your job or me! I don’t mess with you while you’re working… hell I said I didn’t want to stand in the way of your career. “ “I know… but I just hate all those times I had to cancel on you because of work and I hate not being able to spend time with you when you need me.” “Oh okay... so you’re just making it so you have to spend no time with me at all. That makes plenty of ******** sense…” She paused to try and calm down. “Do you realize you’re my world Brad? I should have never let you become my world but you are, and I can’t change that now.” “You were… are… my world Summer. Don’t think you’re not.” “No, you’re job is your world. It was never me Brad. The thing is that I never cared.” “It was always you I lived for you. Why can’t you see that?” “I lived for you too Brad… now… I guess…” Summer said standing from the floor. She walked into the kitchen. “Summer… what are you thinking?” Brad asked as he scrambled to get up and follow her. He knew exactly what she was thinking and what she was about to do and it scared the hell out of him. “I have nothing left Brad…” Summer said as she stared at the butcher knife she had been using to cut vegetables for dinner. “Don’t say that… don’t even think it…” Brad said as his eyes began to fill with tears. Summer turned her back to him and picked up the knife. “Summer…” “I just want it to stop hurting Brad.” “Put it down babe. This isn’t worth it. I’m not worth it.” Summer just stared blankly at the knife, she seemed to be entranced by it. Brad took a step closer and reached for the knife. Surprised by his hand Summer spun around and the knife lodged itself in Brad’s ribs. “Summer…” Brad said as he fell to the floor. “Oh my god Brad…” Summer said as she knelt beside him. Hot tears were streaming down her face. “I’m so sorry.” “Help me…” Brad gasped. “I’m so sorry…” Summer just kept repeating. “Help…” Summer pulled the knife out of his torso and just stared at the blood. She couldn’t believe what had just happened. She couldn’t wrap her head around the fact that in the last half hour her happy perfect life had gone so horribly wrong. “Please Summer…” Brad said. “I love you Brad…” Summer said as she plunged the knife into his stomach. It seemed as if she was not in control of her own body. She couldn’t stop what she was doing. “Summer…” Brad said with horror in his eyes as he drew his last breath. “I love you.”
“I’m so sorry Brad.” Summer thought as she stared at him lying in her closet. “I just want to be with you so much…” She paused as an idea entered her mind. She jumped up from the floor and rushed into the bathroom where she grabbed all the pain medication and sleeping pills that she could find on her shelf. She returned to her room and laid them on the nightstand. She then went to the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of gin. Returning to her room she crouched down by Brad and with all her strength she struggled to pull his corpse onto the bed. Taking all the pills with the gin she laid on the bed next to Brad and pulled his arm around her. “I love you Brad,” she said as she leaned up to kiss him. Summer settled back in Brad’s arms and just lay there and waited for the never-ending sleep to take her.
