Alec comes up behind Jen as she is talking to her friends, and taps her on the shoulder and steps back quickly as her hand comes flying back at his face, and connects, as she turns she goes into a crouch, she springs at him, Alec blocks her head shot, and he pushes her off of him, as she attempts a round house kick, he catches her foot and holds it until she looks at his face clearly, he sees the fight drain out of her face, and she says, "My sincerest apologizes fight master Alec." she bows low.
"No, that was a good reaction Jen." "Did I hurt you at all Alec?" "You didn't." Ignoring the pain in his cheek. "You sure?" "Yes, I'm sure now run off to class you don't want to be late do you?" "No, I don't sorry again." She bows low and turns away toward her class.
Alec makes a stop in the headmasters office to report how the fight went. "She did well, there was a lot of power in those punches, and kicks." flexing his hand. "What happened to your cheek?" "She got a good punch in." "She got the jump on you?" "Yes, she has gotten quicker over the years, I didn't think she would be that quick though, she barely tensed when I tapped her shoulder, and then she was just in a crouch, in a matter of seconds, I think she's ready." "I suppose so, well lets go get her."
Jen was just finishing her assignment when Alec with a proud look, and Headmistress Lily somber, walk in and she starts to realize that what happened this morning was a test. She thinks to herself, "I didn't do that good did I?" Jen gathers her things with a heavy heart, as the teacher waves her over. She catches a friends' eye from this morning, and her eyes tear up. She walks over to Alec and Lily, and bows to them both.
Jen looks once more around the room one last time, and nods to her friends, that she's known for years, maybe never going to see them again. She sees the looks range from confusion, to anger, to happiness, to envy. She walks out of the room, trying not to cry. She follows Lily and Alec follows behind. Alec hands her a tissue and she realizes that she is crying. She dabs her eyes and forces herself to stop crying, they reach the Headmasters office. She is surprised to find her mentors are there waiting for them. One by one they come up to shake her hand, which makes her feel the tears at the back of her eyes begin to form again. She forces them back, and shakes her mentors hands with a strong grip.
"Jen do you know why we brought you here?" "I'm leaving the school, because I attacked a teacher?" "No, that was a test of all that we taught you, and we believe that you are ready to move on, into the world to protect someones life." "What? I'm one of the youngest students here, I still have a lot to learn." Lily holds up her hand and Jen stops immediately. Lily says, "You have learned all we can teach you, once you are able to land a good hit on Alec you are ready to move on to the world to protect someone." "That was a lucky shot though, I wasn't expecting anyone to tap me on my shoulder today, I just reacted, what if someone accidentally bumps into me out there? The same thing will happen." "With you Jen you will do fine, you will learn to know who is dangerous and who is not." "How are you so sure? You've only known me since I came here 3 years ago." "You might be one of the newer students but you have had experiences that the other students couldn't dream of." Alec says stepping in.
Jen flashes back to when her and Alec met.
It was a cool night in December, she doesn't notice the cold as she runs with Anna, towards the safety of their house, one of their pursuers laughs, and that spurs Jen and Anna into a faster run as their legs complain, feeling like they are on fire. They reach the door and they bolt inside, locking all 5 dead bolts into place. Jen runs upstairs taking them 3 at a time, to bolt the windows shut. They shared a house with 2 other people, they came out of their rooms looking confused, Jen says, "Don't come out of your rooms no matter what you hear, alright?" "Okay?" They give each other a puzzled look and return to their rooms and lock their doors with the dead bolts installed on the inside of the door.
Jen yells to Anna, "Please get away from the window." As she flies down the stairs taking them 3 at a time. Anna does what she says obediently, remembering the last time she didn't listen to Jen's orders. They were in New York at the time, and they were being chased by something that they didn't want to know of, all they knew at the time was that they wanted to get out of there. Anna wanted to be done being chased so she stopped and Jen whipped around to try to guard her from what was chasing them, but someone grabbed her before she could get to Anna.
She felt a cloth go over her eyes and over her mouth. She felt a sharp pain in the back of her head, and she stumbled, and fell but before she hit the ground she was caught by a muscular arm, as she was losing consciousness someone pulled the cloth away from her eyes and looking at her were the most stunning blue gray eyes you could ever imagine, she tried to break away from the perfection in front of her to look for Anna, but she couldn't break the hold those blue gray eyes had on her. She slipped into unconsciousness about then.
She woke up in a room, with one dim light in the corner, but that was all she needed to see by. She was on a cot, against the wall, no windows only one door in the room, as she got up to try to the door the world swam before her eyes, she sat back down until that went away. She got up more slowly the next time using the wall for support, she made her way to the door and found it was locked, she wasn't expecting anything less. She attested her surroundings and found that there was a table, with a tray of food on it, where the lamp was sitting, she found a plastic cup of what looked like water, a hard biscuit, and a bowl of what looked like soup. She didn't touch any of it. She went and sat on the bed to wait.
A few hours or minutes, later the door lock clicked and she sat upright, a little to quickly, she braced herself on the bed for a moment trying to force the room to stop spinning, she succeeded in giving herself a headache. A man stepped into the room, with a tray of food, they said, "I thought you would have been hungry by now, but I guess not." looking at the tray of food untouched in the corner. He swapped the trays out, so this one was steaming, her stomach growled and she ignored it. "Where am I?" "I can't tell you that or you might try to find a way to leave, and we would get so lonely without you here." "Where's Anna?" "Oh that's your friends name?" "She wouldn't say anything, so we put her somewhere she doesn't have to talk at all." He laughs evilly, "Where is she you, " "Aw no swearing my dear we wouldn't want to dirty that pretty mouth of yours." She glared at him, through her headache. He saw the discomfort, she tried to hide, but it showed.
He looked at her in concern, he moved to where she sat on the bed and tried to get a look at the back of her head but she swatted at him. "I am just checking to make sure they didn't injure you to badly on the way here." She reached a hand behind her head watching him as she did so, she pressed her hand to the back of her head and pulled it away when it hurt, when she looked down at her hand it was red and sticky with blood. He swore under his breath, and left the room, a few minutes later he came back with another person, a female with a first aid kit.
She smiled at her and introduced herself as Maryann, she looks like she wouldn't hurt me Jen thought, but you never know. Maryann came up next to Jen and asked, "May I examine your head wound?" "Yes." Jen said cautiously, tense to make a run for it if things went badly. Maryann came around on the opposite side of the bed where Jen sat. Maryann gasped in horror, she asked, "Does it hurt when I do this?" as she pressed lightly. There was a tinge of pain but nothing she couldn't hide. "No." "Now?" As she pressed a little bit harder. "Yes." As she felt the headache escalate to past the pain she wasn't able to hide, as tears sprang to her eyes, she didn't let them fall, but she remained seated. "Okay I'm going to clean it and wrap your head, okay?" "Okay, as long as it stops this headache." "This might hurt a little." Jen braces herself for the pain.
Maryann puts a numbing paste in it, and waits until it takes affect, then she be cleans the wound as gently as she can, but there were a few rocks and pebbles in the wound so she picked the bigger ones out and flushes the wound out with water. and puts disinfectant in it, places a gauze pad on it, then wraps Jens head with a gauze strip. "There all clean." "Thank you." As her headache starts to fade she feels sleepy, and yawns.Maryann says, "You should eat, it will help." Maryann bows to the man and leaves.
The man gives her a disapproving look but then leaves. Jen falls asleep, and for the next few days is woken only by Maryann to change her gauze wrap, and for her to eat. On the seventh or eighth day she wakes to the man, watching her, while he sits by the door, humming to himself. "Your finally awake, you've been asleep for 2 days straight." "I was?" "Yes, now get out of bed." She gets up slowly, as she's waiting for the room to start spinning, but it doesn't. She looks surprised so he explains, "Your head wound caused that." "Oh." She touches the back of her head, its a little sore but it doesn't hurt.
"Come on," as he walks towards the door, "You going to stay in here or do you want to go outside?" She walks to the door cautiously, as he holds it open for her. She walks into a hallway, she looks back at the man and he moves to close the door. She looks at the number on the door, it says 25, she tries to remember the number. He doesn't bother to lock the door, he moves down the right hallway and stops as he realizes that she isn't behind him.
"Come on, I know you can move faster than that." She catches up to him and he begins to walk again. He catches her a few times, as she stumbles. At the end of the hallway there is a split, he chooses the left one, this leads down a flight of stairs, he holds her hand as they descend, at the bottom of the stairs he continues to hold her hand as she catches her breath.
She doesn't find this weird, she is actually grateful for his support. She was so exhausted by the walk so far, she collapsed at the next hallway, she had lost track of how many they had gone through, and what turns got them there. He let her rest a few minutes, and said, "Come on." Helping her to stand, he put her arm on his shoulders, and lifted. She groaned, but she stood up, anyways. He kept her arm on his shoulder as they walked, she asked, "When are we going to get outside?" "Soon, we have a few more hallways to go." That gave her a new boost of energy, after a few hallways they made it to a door.
He stepped up to the door still supporting her, he opened the door and she was so happy she forgot all about her fatigue and she looked up at the man, and he nodded to her. She ran outside and found that it wasn't fenced in, as far as she could tell. She heard a clicking noise, and realized it was the door shutting and locking.
Jen had two choices wait by the door until someone came for her, or start walking. She didn't know if they meant to lock her out here, but if she stayed out here then she could freeze. She didn't know where she was, so she weighed the risks of walking and finding a way out of here against dieing from the cold by waiting by the door.
She chose to start walking, at first it looked endless but then she saw a gray smudge on the horizon and as she jogging towards it, away from the house she realized it was a car, when she realized that she began to run towards it. Jen found a bend in a road before she reached the car. She started following the road as the car got closer, she started to feel the fatigue come back as she slowed from a jog to a walk. As the car drew nearer she started waving her arms trying to get their attention, after a few minutes of that she collapsed on the blacktop, and wasn't able to get up, so she just lied there, as the car drew closer she lifted her head, and tried to rise but didn't have any energy to.
When Alec saw the person collapse on the road, was wondering where they were coming from, because there is no settlements out here, just desert and this one road. As he drew closer he saw them try to rise, but just collapse again. He pulled up beside them, to find it was a girl around the age of 14 or 15 laying there. He collected her in his arms and placed her in the backseat. He sped back to the school with his passenger. Alec froze every time she muttered or moved.
A few hours later he was pulling into the parking lot of the school, he parked and when he was lifting her out of the back seat, she muttered," Anna." He ignored it. When he got her into the nurses office, she took one look at her and knew she wasn't a student, but she needed help. So she ignored school policy as she used an IV to put fluids into the poor girl. Mean while Alec was walking to the Headmistress's office to tell Lily, he brought the girl in.
A few days later she woke up, in the schools' sick ward. The attending nurse was checking her IV when she got a fright as Jen started to wake up. The nurse called Lily to tell her that the girl is awake, she also called Alec, because he's the one that brought her in. Lily showed up before Alec, because he had to finish teaching a class.
Lily looks at the girl as the dazed look started to wear off of her face. About half an hour after she began to wake up, Alec had finished with his class and walks in as they are going to start to look at her head. As the nurse takes off the wrap she gasps as they see a blackened mat of hair, dirt, and blood on the back of the girls' head. Alec watches as Lily asks the girl, "Can we trim your hair so we can get a better look at your head wound?" "Yes." In a small voice, she looks up and shy's as she realizes that Alec is in the room. Lily looks up in confusion at the girls shy, then makes the connection. "Alec can we talk out in the hall a moment?" "Yes Headmistress." They walk out and the nurse is trying to calm the girl.
"Alec this girl, has had a lot happen to her in the past couple of years that we don't even know about, but it's clear that she has had a bad experience with men, so I don't think you should come near her until she is more informed of how she got here." "Yes Headmistress." Alec bows and turns to go back to his classroom to wait for the next hour of kids.
Lily returns to the ward and finds the girl with a new bandage on her head, and she has tears running down her face. Lily looks around for the nurse but she is with another patient on the other side of the room. So she walks up to the girl and says, "My name is Headmistress Lily, what's your name?" "Jen." As she is trying to wipe away the tears. "Why are you crying?" Jen stays silent, as her eyes stare blankly at the floor, and start to tear up again, she doesn't bother to wipe them away, Lily walks over and pulls out a handkerchief, and wipes away the tears as they fall, she hesitates to hold the girl but, she does and the girl begins to cry more. When she thinks the worst of the tears is over she asks, "Why are you crying Jen?" "Anna's gone, she gone because of me." She begins to sob again, so Lily just holds her as it passes.
"Who's Anna?" "She was my best friend, then a few years ago, we started to get attack by a lot of people, then we figured if we kept moving then we would be safe, but there was always someone or something to attack us in every city we moved to, we were never safe, we tried moving to the country, but they still followed us." "Didn't your parents worry when you left?" "Both of our parents were killed in a train accident, we were in the sleeper car and our parents were in the food car eating breakfast, and everyone but us and a few others, no one noticed 2 kids leaving after the accident, we had no family si we began to wander, I had money from a large trust fund, and so did she." "Do you know why they pursued you and her?" "No we tried to figure out if we made enemies with anyone, but we couldn't remember any, so we just kept moving on, until a few weeks back." "What happened?" "I failed at keeping her safe." She started to shut down again. "Where's Anna now?" "I don't know, we were captured and the man, separated us, he said that we put her somewhere she doesn't have to talk at all." She began to cry again. Lily just held her until she stopped crying and fell asleep.
Alec wasn't able to concentrate on his lesson while worrying about what happened to the girl. So he let them practice in pairs until the hour was over. He found Lily sitting in her office searching the internet, with books scattered all around her desk. She looked tired, but that wasn't like her to hide out in her office during the day, she was usually walking around the school talking to students, and teachers. Alec knocked on the door frame, and her head shot up, but when she realized that it was Alec she sighed and pulled her glasses off, and put them down on the desk to rub her eyes.
"Alec where did you find that girl?" "I was out driving through the desert on the way to the next town, and I saw walking on the road, and them she collapsed, so I brought her here." "She was a train wreck survivor she and her friend Anna were 2 of the 15 people to survive but they vanished after that." "How can 2 girls just vanish off the face of the earth?" "I have no idea." She returns to searching. Alec makes a daring request, "May I go see her?" "Fine but make sure she's asleep first, why do you want to go see her so badly?" "I can't stop thinking about her, I just want to make sure she's okay to put my mind at ease."
An hour later Alec goes into the sick ward looking for the girl to introduce himself. The attending nurse points him to the third room on the left. He peaks around the corner and sees she is staring at the door and she smiles when he is looking around the corner. So he takes a deep breath and lets it out, then goes into the room, slowly so he doesn't scare her. She gives him a questioning look as he sits down in the visitors chair, and looks at her and says, "My name is fight master Alec, what's your name?" "Jen." "Well Jen that's a nice name you got there." "Yours is cool too." He moves to shake her hand and she gives him a good gripped hand shake, they both laugh at this.
