Oneshot Short Story #5
Her heart was pounding in her chest, her lungs screaming for the air they were being denied, but still she continued her frenzied pace. Tears were blinding her vision and she had lost all sense of direction several blocks away, but she was determined to get away from the danger behind her.
Not far behind here was a deep, wet sort of breathing and footfalls that were rather heavy, but determined all the same. They paused, only to be followed by a large gutteral bellow that shook the air, making the girl stumble with the sheer force of the cry. The gutteral bellow was followed by a series of clicks and a piercing scream.
She was frantic and managed to duck behind a dumpster bin just as a large explosion disentegrated the wall she had passed not 15 seconds ago. She had figured out from her ex partner that this beast uses sound waves to destroy anything in front of it. The beast itself she never seen, but she could only guess it was no larger than a person 8 feet tall, not monsterous, but deadly all the same. She had forgotten she was still holding onto her pistol tightly enough, knuckles white. She knew she had to keep running, keep escaping from this monstrousity, but she was becoming doubtful and more desperate. It would only be a matter of time before she was within its sights again, only a matter of time before she could go no further and give up.
Should she be giving up so soon? After all, her partner was taken from her, but he told her to keep going and don't stop until the barricade was reached. Only thing was that she didnt know where to go anymore. She felt like she was a rat in a massive maze and she was panicked. She was lost and no longer confident in herself. The footfalls persisted behind her, bringing her back to reality and she continued on her uncertain path. She made a left turn and came across an alleyway with no visible way out, save for some windows that were only just within her acrobatic ability. Taking a chance, she began the short ascent into unchartered territory.
She knew the city was mostly abandoned by now, all people evacuated as soon as this beast made its existance known. She could only guess how many escaped to safety and how many others were taken unwillingly. She knew this monster was attracted to sounds, her footfalls were not making things easier for her and she cursed inwardly after knowing she was leading this beast. Using her pistol, she used a well-aimed strike and shattered the glass, wincing when some shards cut into her skin.
The footfalls halted again and she held her breath as best as she could when the clicks echoed around her. The wet sucking breath was heard moments later and she closed her eyes tightly, praying to anything that it would not bellow. After a few shaky sucks of air, she heard it forced out and the steps continued. Taking this as her cue, she climbed into the building and noted it was an office space. The floor was carpet, much to her relief, it would buy her a lot of time before the sounds of her feet would be heard again, making the beast realize it was tricked and have it bellow again.
She put on a fast pace and sneaked around until she found an exit to the streets. Descending some steps as quietly as she could, she opened the first door she saw and to her relief, the street on the other side was made available to her. Another surprise was the barricade containing some officers. She wanted to run, but the extra sound would bring a reaction that would devestate her mission. She felt a beam of light on her and she placed her arms above her head in submission, but continued her pace. She glanced behind her nervously and looked back, using her right hand to silence the cops, or at least try to convey that message. It seems to have worked and she continued her pace.
Before she could start running, a massive bellow echoed behind the building. She broke into a run and stopped at the fence line.
"Let me through, please!"
The law enforcement crew drew their weapons at the source of the sound. A series of clicking echoed.
"Please! You have to let me th-"
The scream pierced through all her senses and she realized she would never be able to complete her mission. She turned around with a sorrowful expression on her face. She looked back, just avoiding some shards of debris that flew in her direction. She closed her eyes just as the boom shattered the air, hurling a wall in her and the law enforcement's direction.
THE END
A/N: I just realized these are getting longer, but I am not worried. Any length is just fine.
