The old man steps in front of an old shop. The wooden sign spelled out the words Merlin’s Shop. He walks in and the bell on the door alerts the owner. The interior was cramped with shelves and racks all of which were full of books and bottles.
A young man comes fumbling out of the back room. He wore a purple robe with stars and moons on it. He was rather small in stature and his blonde hair looked recently–and rather poorly at that–cut. His pale green eyes were hidden behind thick glasses.
“M-May…” He says very squeaky. He clears his throat. “How may I help you?”
“I’m here to see Merlin.” Arthur says rather seriously.
The young man cannot control a chuckle that passes his lips. “I am the great Merlin. Do not be fooled by my boyish disguise.”
“No, you’re not. I know how to recognize Merlin in all his forms and you are not him. I am Arthur Penndragon and I demand to see Merlin.”
The boy cannot help himself and he bursts out laughing. “Aw man! You are the first whoever claimed to be the King.”
“I do not claim anything! I am Arthur Penndragon son of Uther Penndragon.” He snaps and slams his fist down on the counter. The boy jumps not sure what to make of this crazy man in front of him until he spot the blue ring on the man’s finger. It was a blue diamond and crave in it was the emblem of the true king.
The boy’s face turns pale and he starts to tremble. “M-M-M-My Lord! I beg for your forgiveness. The truth is Merlin is my ancestor but no one has ever held a fraction of the power he once held.” The boy goes to bow but ends up hitting his head on the counter.
Arthur sighs; he really could not blame this boy. By the looks of it the world had changed a lot since his time. “It’s alright. For now can you at least read this? My eyes are not has good has they use to be.” Arthur hands him the medallion.
The boy takes the medallion. “They are runes.” He says. “Let me get something.” He retrieves a book from a shelf.
“You cannot read runes on your own?” Arthur asks rather surprised.
“No. I guess you could say I am a slow learner.” He explains rather embarrassed. After a while of studying the runes on the medallion and the runes in the book the boy speaks up. “It says: ‘May the betrayer of our king be cursed to protect him in his sleep in the form most befitting them, a snake. Only when the king awakes will the betrayer take another form. But never shall they regain their former self. Only the king will see them for who and what they are’.” He looks up. “Who’s the betrayer?”
Arthur sits down amazed that Merlin would go to such lengths to repay her for what she did. “Guinevere. She betrayed my love and Merlin cursed her for it.” He puts his head in his hands. “Oh Guin. I never wanted this.”
“Do you know what this other form is?’ the boy asks
“No. Merlin’s spells are a mystery even to me.”
