Four months ago, the moroi royal court was attacked by an enormous alliance of strigoi. The assault lasted only a few seconds. The guardians were so outnumbered even the moroi trained in combat couldn't sway the battle. Many of the inhabitants of the court were killed. The rest ran. Though there are several safe places for moroi, the only one that came close to being able to house the entire court (though crowded) was St. Vladimir's Academy.
The strigoi that attacked have a leader - a real leader. In the past, strigoi have grouped up before, but never for a long period of time, and never with a true set of goals that appear to be achievable. This leader is thought to be very old, nigh unstoppable. His goal is to eradicate the moroi. His first target: royals and anyone close by. More and more humans are become enslaved by his alliance and there may be a traitor among the moroi.
The Academy is practically crawling with guardians. Unfortunately, this has given the occupants a false sense of security. They don't know that the strigoi are practically at their doorstep. Oh, yes. Less than seventy miles away the leader of the strigoi alliance has turned the lower levels of an old abandoned factory into his base of operations. Because of this feeling of safety, many of the royals allow their tongues to wag. No one could possibly believe that they have a traitor among them. Someone is selling every piece of information heard to the strigoi.
Will the strigoi kill each other off before their goal is reached? Will the denizens of the school figure out who the traitor is before it's too late? Can the spirit users find a way to wipe the alliance out in a mass way? None are more likely or unlikely than the next. Everything hangs in the balance. Where do you fit in?
