Black cats are supposed to be bad luck. This morning while i sat in the car, waiting for my grandpa to finish getting his hair cut at the barbershop in the middle of some weird suburb (i know, who has a barbershop in the middle of nowhere?). Anyway, i was sitting in the car, listening to a J-pop CD when i glance out the open window next to my seat, look down, and guess what i see?
A cat.
And not just anykind of cat, a black one.
A really huge, fluffy, black cat with yellow-green eyes staring up at me intently.
I turned off the music and removed my headphones. Then i leaned my head out the window and saw the cat sitting, staring at me about a yard or so away from the side of the car.
"Nice kitty...?"
meow
Wow. i couldnt believe it actually answered. Don't cats usually just ignore people or walk away or something?
"Uh... do you live around here kitty?" i asked.
meow
"okay..." i said, "why am i talking to a cat? its not like it can understand me or anything!"
The cat looked at me for a few seconds, then answered with meoooooow.
I smiled and looked down at the cat. "Well, maybe you do understand me. I guess i wont really be able to tell if you ever can or not. It would be really nice to take you home with me, but the apartment doesnt allow pets. It's too bad... you probably belong to someone anyway."
The cat looked to the ground then started licking itself.
"I'll take that answer as you're a stray."
meow
I rested my chin on my hands. "I like talking to you, even if you are a cat. You're a very good listener, and you seem nice. It's funny, i always thought black cats were bad luck, but hanging out with you cat, it makes me feel good inside for some reason. I've been going through a lot lately, you know? I just finished my last day of middle school yesterday and i start high school in less than a couple months. Some of my friends are moving away, even my boyfriend! Everythings changing you know? and it stresses me out a little. but talking to you cat, i feel a little better."
meow, meooow. meow
I smiled once again. "You are an excellent listener cat. Thank you."
meow
I gave a snicker. "But then again, how do i know you're not just trying to beg for food?"
It stared at me.
"Well, i would feed you if i could. but i'm afraid i dont have anything a cat could eat. only some gum and a chocolate bar. But cats dont eat chocolate!"
The cat started walking up to the window, then got into a position like it was going to jump through the window onto me.
I dont know exactly what i did next, but i remember in the panick i rolled up the car window, seperating myself from the cat.
The last i saw of that black cat was a mound of dark fur walk towards an alleyway, turn around, and seemed to make a gesture somewhat of a bow or a nod. The it turned back to it's path and darted into the shadows.
What a strange animal. Thats what i thought to myself as it disappeared.
Black cats are supposed to be bad luck. They are supposed to bring misfortune and nothing but trouble. That's what i always used to believe. But maybe sometimes they could bring good fortune. Who knows? i did feel a little better talking to that strange black cat. But i guess i'll never know for sure.
