Riley opened his eyes slowly to only find himself shuttting them quickly and tightly due to a bright light stabbing it's way through the slits in his eyes. He turned his head to the right where he could feel the shade resting across his face and again attempted to open his eyes, this time with much more succes then before. He sat up and looked around to find himself in his messy room and somewhat confused. He remembered a dream he had just before he had woken up, but was it only a dream? It had seemed so real to him.
He brushed the thought aside as he looked over to the opposite side of his room to find his twin brother Curtis's bed, unmade and empty. A sudden jolt of panic struck Riley and he jumped out of bed and dashed downstairs in search of his brother. What if the dream was real and Curtis was really lost? or what if something worse had happened to him? He slid his way into the kitchen to find his mom flipping pancakes and his twin sitting at the table, unharmed in any way at all, enjoying a delicious breakfest. Something was off....his mom never had time to make breakfest. Riley stood dumbfounded in the kitchen doorway waiting for an explanation.
"Oh thank God your awake!" Mrs. Andrews said as she dropped the spatula she was holding and rushed to Riley's side. her hand went straight to his forehead, in attempt to check his temperature.
"....uhh...." was all that came out of Riley's mouth as he still stood confused to his surroundings.
"I was so worried about you boys! getting sick like that out of no where! if you weren't feeling well why didn't you just tell me! i relaize that i'm busy but you kids come first! if your sick then you need to let me kno before soething like this happens!" his mother was saying.
Riley, still very confused, asked "what? what are you talking about? i'm not sick"
"That's the same thing your brother said when he woke up 20 minutes ago! you two were out for a week! you don't call that being sick!? i called the doctors but they said that you two were perfectly healthy as far as he could tell, besides the fever that is."
Mrs. Andrews kept ratteling on about one thing after another as Riley took a seat next to his brother. They two brothers had a silent conversation using facial expressions, agreeing that the two would talk after breakfest.
Riley leaned back in his chair not exactly wanting to eat the whole large amount of pancakes that his mom had just tossed on a plate in front of him, even though he knew that his mom's pancakes were the best around and it was a miracle that she even had time to make them seeing as she's so busy with her work all the time. Riley decided that he'd eat as much as he could and enjoy the breakfest as much as possible, for he had a feeling something was vaguly wrong.
********************************************************************************
All through breakfest questions kept popping up in Riley's mind as he tried more and more to figure out what his mom meant by telling him he had been asleep for a week. He had no memory of anthing that had previously happened before he was out for that week, the only thing he had were pieces of that dream. He kept replaying the parts of the dream that he remembered though his mind, but it seemed that everytime he would go over it, more parts would disappear. Things weren't making any sense. As he walked up the stairs he hoped that Curtis would be able to help explain, seeing as he was in the same boat as Riley, according to their mom.
Curtis entered the bedroom first and let Riley pass by as he closed the door behind them. Riley layed down on his backside across the bed as Curtis worked his way over to his own bed and sat down on the edge.
"Man those were some gooood pancakes!" Riley said with a warming smile across his face.
Curtis smiled and nodded in agreement,"it's just a shame that she never has time to make them anymore, what with work and all."
Riley nodded during the pause in their conversation, then asked what he guessed was probably the same question Curtis had on him mind, "so what exactly happend? it's not making any sense to me. What happend while i was asleep?"
"i donno man, all i remember was this weird dream about school, and darkness and creepy science teachers and junk. and there's this voice in my head i keep repeating over and over again that i remember from the dream, but now i can't even remember what the dream was about."
"yea same here, i keep trying to remember what happened in a crazy weird dream i had too, but nothing's coming up, the more i try and remember, the more i forget. What's got me stumped is what mom was talking about, us being sick and all. i mean i feel kinda weird inside but i don't really feel sick, and i don't remember feeling sick, all i remember was finally going home for the weekend and chillin out with you and Runia all Saturday and most of sunday. Oh and i remember pretending to do my homework right before bed so i could get on the computer for a bit" Riley said with a slight grin,"but then that's it, bedtime and then nothin.."
"Yea i remember that too. i don't feel sick either..unless you count the massive headache i seem to have, but that's no big, i already took some advil for that right when i woke up."
"So do you think we were really out for a week?"
"well...i guess so? i mean why would mom lie about that?"
Riley made a face showing that Curt had a good point on that one, but he was still stumped.
Curtis continued, " I woke up before you, like by a 1/2 hour, i went downstairs like any normal day and there was mom looking like she hadn't slept in days, you kno, like when she has a big 42hour meeting to attend or whatever she does, only this time she was in her robe like you saw her in this morning, and was talking on her cell sounding really...sceared i guess....and the first thing she does once she spots me is jump up off the couch and basically tackles me while crying and asking if i was alright. She told me i had been out for a week, same as you and that you were still asleep. that's when she went crazy making breakfest and calling the doctor i'm guessing..."
Riley shivered a bit. Unlike his twin, he absoultly hated doctors and wanted nothing to do with them. The last time he had been to the doctor, he was pretty much forced to go, seeing as he couldn't move without having an burning pain shocking all through his back. and only after then he was forced to do another horrible thing....take medicine for it.
"After that",Curtis began again ignoring Riley's small shiver,"she had me sit down for breakfest and she kept talking to me but all i could focus on was my headache as i popped a few advil. i actually feel kinda bad..."
"no worries man, if it makes you feel any better i wasn't really paying attention to her either, i was to busy trying to figure out all that was going on."
Curtis smiled a bit and he laid down on his stomach across his bed. Riley sat up for a moment, reaching the remote for the cd player and pushed play and lowered the volume, music had always seemed to help the twins think. Both the Andrews twins lay across their seperate beds trying to solve the mystery of their past week and of the creepy dreams that neither of them could seem to remember. The sun shined though the slits in the blind seeping into the room as Taking Back Sunday played softly throughout the room.
